Arrest Made in City’s 5th Homicide

Around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019, Tyquan Brown(23) became Hamilton’s 5th homicide victim as he was celebrating the Toronto Raptors victory outside a Sherman Avenue North residence.

Tyquan Brown was with a group of other fans who had been watching the game when Dylon Duarte (20) of Hamilton arrived in the area armed with a knife. Dylon Duarte showed-up as he was unhappy that an ex-girlfriend was socializing with the group of basketball fans. Within seconds of his arrival, he fatally stabbed Tyquan Brown, who was not known to him. As the group chased Duarte northbound on Sherman Avenue the victim wandered southbound and collapsed in an alleyway just north of Barton Street East.

Despite efforts to save his life by first responders, Tyquan Brown succumbed to his injuries a short time later at the Hamilton General Hospital.

The investigation revealed that Dylon Duarte was responsible for the murder and an arrest warrant for the charge of First Degree murder was issued.

Around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019, Dylon Duarte was located in the area of Grandville Avenue and Delewana Avenue. He was arrested as he was entering a taxi by members of the Major Crime Unit and East End patrol officers.

Duarte will make a first appearance at the John Sopinka Court House at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

The murder weapon has not been recovered at this time.

Investigators wish to acknowledge the assistance they received from the many witnesses, both at the scene of the murder and where the get-away car was dumped. Their evidence was crucial in solving this case.

The investigation will continue as detectives obtain area surveillance footage to review over the upcoming days.
