Driver Arrested After Fleeing Collision Scene

Hamilton Police investigated a collision involving a car and train at the Cochrane Road train tracks, south of Lawrence Road. The vehicle was left abandoned; however, through investigation police were able to identify the driver. A 20-year-old Hamilton man was arrested and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His bail has been opposed.

On Wednesday, January 2, 2019, shortly before 2:00 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to the railway crossing on Cochrane Road South of Lawrence Road for a motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a CP freight train. The train had been travelling eastbound when it became involved in a collision with a vehicle which had been travelling southbound on Cochrane Road. Witnesses state the railway crossing lights were operating at the time of the collision.

Once on scene police located a black 2014 GMC Terrain on its side, on the south side of the railway tracks. There were no occupants in the vehicle. A description was provided by witnesses who saw the driver flee the scene. The immediate area was secured as police searched for the driver. A short time later police located the driver at his residence which was in the area. The driver was arrested in relation to the collision. Further investigation revealed the accused has eight outstanding charges before local courts and four in an out of town court.

As a result of sustaining non-life threatening injuries, the accused was transported to the hospital for further treatment. He remains in hospital under police custody awaiting an audio remand.

The vehicle has been seized for further investigation.
