Hamilton Man Charged with Carelessly Discharging Firearm

Hamilton Police have arrested an 81-year-old Hamilton man for carelessly discharging a firearm.

On July 10, 2019, shortly after 6:00 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to neighbour trouble at a rural property in the area of Highway 6 and Butter Road East in Hamilton.

Police learned that a neighbour’s dog had previously come onto the suspect’s property and attacked his dog. Today the neighbour’s dog again came onto the suspect’s property. The suspect retrieved a firearm from his residence and discharged it from his property to ward off the dog. A stray round of birdshot from the fired casing hit the neighbour in the torso. The neighbour received a minor injury that did not require medical attention. Police executed a search warrant on the suspect’s property and recovered a shotgun, rifle, pellet gun and ammunition.

The 81-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with the following offences:

Careless Discharge Firearm, Unlawful Possession Firearm

The male is to appear in court for a bail hearing today.
