Hamilton Police Officers Charged With Assault

Two Hamilton Police officers have been charged with assault arising from separate incidents that took place in March and May 2022.

On March 8, 2022, Hamilton Police were made aware of a video showing an interaction between a citizen and an officer. The interaction occurred when officers responded to a mischief/domestic call at a residence. The video was concerning and the Service commenced a criminal investigation into the officer’s conduct. The officer was immediately suspended.

As a result of the investigation, Constable Michael Kowalchuk has been charged with Assault Level One. His first court appearance date is scheduled for July 12, 2022.

On May 26, 2022, Hamilton Police obtained video from a commercial establishment and a citizen following the arrest of a suspect in a stolen vehicle investigation. The level of force used by one officer during the interaction resulted in a separate criminal investigation. The officer was immediately suspended.

As a result of the investigation, Constable Brian Wren has been charged with Assault Level One. His first court appearance date is scheduled for July 21, 2022.

Hamilton Police will not comment further as these matters are now before the courts.
