Hamilton Police Service (HPS) is looking for dedicated volunteers to provide support, information, resources and practical assistance to victims of crime and trauma. Volunteers work with police to provide emotional support to someone who has been physically hurt, threatened, survived a tragedy, suffered a traumatic loss or witnessed a traumatic event.

“We’re looking for empathetic, compassionate community-minded citizens to join our team. Our volunteers play a very important role in providing emotional assistance to victims when they are at their most vulnerable,” says Susan Double, Victims Services Branch. “This is a great opportunity for individuals to gain experience and skills in crisis intervention while providing a valuable contribution to the Hamilton community.”

Successful applicants must be excellent listeners and a minimum of 21 years old. Candidates must also possess a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle. Volunteers contribute 32 hours of on-call availability each month for a minimum of 12-months.

“Volunteering in the Victim Services Branch has been extremely rewarding,” says Volunteer John Stanley. “For some people, your presence provides a calming, reassuring voice that helps them navigate a crisis.”

Established in 1994, Victim Services is a Branch of the Hamilton Police Service. It is a 24/7 on-scene crisis intervention service for victims of crime and trauma in the City of Hamilton. Four full-time staff and over 80 volunteers provide emotional support, information, resources and practical assistance.
