Protester Arrested for Assault at City Hall

On Saturday, December 7, 2019 shortly before 11:30 a.m., members of the Hamilton Police Service ACTION team were in the area of 71 Main Street West monitoring a protest between “Yellow Vest” and anti-hate supporters, when they witnessed an assault. Citizens supporting each of the groups have been protesting weekly in front of City Hall. The 51-year-old male victim was initially treated at the scene for minor injuries and then transported to hospital where he was later released.

It is believed that a dispute over the removal of signage was a factor in the assault.

53-year-old Rebecca Long of Hamilton was arrested and charged with assault. She was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear in court on January 7, 2020.

Hamilton Police continue to investigate the incident. If you have any information that could assist with the investigation, you are encouraged to call 905-546-4725.
