Hamilton Police continue to investigate a robbery that occurred on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 and are looking to identify the suspect.

On Tuesday, August 23, 2022, shortly before 1:30 p.m., a lone male suspect entered the CIBC located at 1882 King Street East, Hamilton and approached the victim from the rear while they were using the ATM. As the money was dispensed, the suspect demanded the victim turn over the funds.

The suspect obtained the cash and fled on foot to a white SUV parked in the branch parking lot. The vehicle was last observed travelling northbound on Rosedale Avenue towards Lawrence Road.

During the incident the suspect was in possession of an edged weapon believed to be a knife. 

The victim was not physically injured during the incident.

The suspect is described as male, white, 5'9-5'10, heavy build, thinning hair, blue medical mask, sunglasses, black t-shirt, white gloves and jeans.

Investigators are appealing for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect in this robbery. On Wednesday, August 14, 2019, shortly after 4:30 a.m., officers responded to a break and enter to a pharmacy located near the intersection of Rymal Road East and Upper Wentworth. The suspects were believed to have been operating a pick-up truck and used it to gain entry into the store. The suspects were unsuccessful in their attempt to remove the ATM and fled prior to police arrival.

The Hamilton Police BEAR Unit continues to investigate.

The following tips are being provided in an attempt to deter criminal activity related to ATMs :

• Where possible, place the ATM in an area of the store that is not easily accessible or visible from a door or window.
• Maintain ATMs with a minimum amount of currency.
• Ensure existing video surveillance systems are functional and equipped to capture the interior and exterior of the business.
• Consider the installation of bollards and or concrete parking curbs outside windows and doors to prevent access into the business by vehicles.
• Remove any excess signage from windows and doors, allowing potential witnesses a better view of the business's interior.
• Utilize exterior lighting to encourage witnesses.

Implementing the above tips is not a guarantee to stop crime; however, they will lessen the likelihood of becoming a victim by making the business less attractive to the criminal element.

On March 3, 2019, shortly after 1:30 a.m., a pick-up truck reversed through the front entrance of EZ Mart located at 1565 Barton Street East in Hamilton, causing significant damage to the front of the store.

A male was witnessed exiting the truck and attempting to steal the ATM machine inside. After failing in his efforts the suspect gets back into the truck and flees the scene.

On February 28, 2019, shortly before 10:30 p.m., police attended the Gas Trac gas bar at 2416 Barton Street East to assist Hamilton Fire with an unoccupied vehicle fully engulfed inside one of the carwash bays. There was significant fire damage done to the business.

Bear Detectives have identified the male involved in the above two incidents and linked him to other offences involving stolen autos, theft of gas and other criminal driving offences.

Ben Curley has been brought into custody with his bail opposed.

BEAR Detectives are currently working with both Niagara Regional Police and Brantford Police Service to connect Ben Curley to further charges which appear to be similar.
