The Hamilton Police Emergency Response Unit attended an address on East 36th Street in the city of Hamilton for a male who had threatened a family member. Upon arrival, police initiated communication with a barricaded male who was not a resident. There were no other occupants in the residence at the time. Crisis negotiators responded and continued communication with the male in an attempt to persuade him to exit the residence peacefully. After several hours, a fire occurred in the basement. The fire created a large amount of smoke, causing the male to evacuate the residence. Upon exiting, he attempted to flee and was subsequently arrested. He was taken to hospital for medical attention for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the fire.

The Hamilton Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.

The investigation is ongoing and the scene is being held as Detectives from the Division 30 Criminal Investigations Branch and the Ontario Fire Marshall Office are expected to attend today.

Through investigation, police were made aware there was a concern of gunshots during the incident. At this time police have found no evidence to support that occurred.

The Hamilton Police Service would like to thank area residents for their cooperation during the investigation.

If you have any information that you believe could assist Police with the investigation into this crime, you are asked to contact Detective Sergeant Marco Del Conte by calling 905-546-3851 or Detective Richard Vanderboom at 905-546-2377.
