Back on April 20, 2023, a student returned to where he had securely locked his bicycle during school hours, only to discover that it had been stolen after the lock had been cut. Fortunately, the police were provided with a detailed description of the bicycle along with its serial number.

Fast forward to Monday, May 6, 2024, when police responded to complaints from neighbors about suspicious activity at a vacant home. Upon arrival, they found the property deserted but noticed a bicycle placed in the kitchen. Upon running a check, it was confirmed that the bicycle matched the description of one on file as stolen.

Thanks to the serial number on file, the police were able to successfully trace the bicycle back to its owner.

On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, shortly before 5:00 p.m., a 53-year-old Hamilton man was riding his bicycle westbound on King Street East, when he collided with a 2006 Smart Car being operated by, a 31-year-old Hamilton female that was travelling southbound on Wentworth Street North.  

The cyclist was transported to hospital and is listed as serious but stable condition. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

On average, 600 bicycles are stolen in Hamilton every year, and only four per cent are recovered. Only 20 per cent of recovered bicycles are returned to their owner because police often have a hard time matching the bicycle to its owner.

“Hamilton Police are determined to change those numbers through our online bike registry and our bike bait program. Registering a bike through our new online bike registry is one way to protect your property,” says Superintendent Dave Hennick.

In addition to the new online bike registry, Hamilton Police have also implemented a Bike Bait program. The program operated over the 2020 season and was deployed in high bicycle theft areas. During the season, the bait bicycle was stolen on average once every 20 hours and 36 minutes of deployment. The program led to the arrest of 10 individuals and over 30 charges.

On Thursday, December 19, 2019, members of the Hamilton Police Service Division 20 HEAT Unit, with assistance from the BEAR Unit, executed a search warrant at a residence in the East End of Hamilton, Ontario. Information to support the search warrant application was gathered during a two month long investigation into the thefts of high-end bicycles from both residential and commercial properties in the Ancaster, Aldershot and Dundas areas.

As a result of the search warrant, the following items were located:

• 26 Mountain bikes valued at over $40,000
• Bike parts including rims, tires, forks, handlebars and seats
• Rossignol skis
• Prohibited weapons

• Possession stolen property over $5000

The investigation is ongoing with the potential of additional charges being brought forward in the future.

On Wednesday, September 4, 2019, shortly before 12:30 p.m., a Hamilton Police officer on proactive patrol observed a male repairing a bicycle at the corner of Victoria Avenue South and Main Street East, Hamilton. The officer recognized the male as a wanted party for failing to attend court. As the officer approached the male, he mounted the bicycle and rode off in an attempt to flee. The officer gave chase on foot and quickly caught the male, taking him to the ground. An altercation ensued as the male resisted. The male was eventually taken into police custody with the assistance of additional officers. A search of the male revealed he was in possession of a knife, which he attempted to access during the incident.

Through investigation, police learned the bicycle he was operating was reported stolen in June 2015. Hamilton Police would like to remind bicycle owners to record their serial number and report to police whenever their bicycle is lost or stolen. As a result of the owner taking those steps, police were able to identify the bicycle. Efforts will be made to locate the owner and return the bicycle.

A 24-year-old Hamilton man will appear in court today to answer to charges of assault resisting arrest, possession of stolen property under $5000 and the original charges related to his warrant.

On Sunday, July 7, 2019, a couple was riding their bikes along the Waterfront Trail when they were confronted by a male cyclist. A physical altercation ensued and the suspect fled when police were called.

The investigation has continued and with the assistance of the public, the male was identified. He was arrested on Friday, August 9, 2019, in Burlington by Hamilton Police and held for a bail hearing.

Roderick Campbell is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, September 9, 2019.

On Saturday, July 13, 2019, at approximately 7:30 p.m., two males accessed the yard of a residence located in the area of East 16^th Street and South Bend Road East. They left a short time later taking with them two mountain bikes totalling $1600. During the course of the following three days, both suspects were identified through joint investigations by the owner and police.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2019, shortly after 1:00 p.m., police attended an address in the area of Weir Street North and Dunsmure Road. Because serial numbers were previously recorded, police were able to locate and confirm one of the bicycles. It was subsequently returned to the owner.

Through continued investigation, a potential location for the suspects was identified. Police attended a residence in the area of Main Street East and Sanford Avenue South where Francis Bobolo and Douglas Decker were located. They were taken into police custody and police discovered Decker was bound by a probation order. His arrest signified violations to that order. He was advised of the additional charges.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, both males appeared in court for bail hearings.

Year-to- date, the Hamilton Police Service has recovered 70 stolen bicycles which is a decrease from the previous two years; 119 in 2018 and 123 in 2017 respectively. After 30 days, unclaimed bicycles are sent off to public auction. Prior that, police exhaust efforts to identify the owner by examining the bicycles for serial numbers and cross-referencing them with reports.

Hamilton Police urge bicycle owners to always record the serial number and if stolen or lost to report it to the police right away.
