Hamilton Police Service is advising the community of a concerning increase in youth-related violent incidents, including a rise in the misuse of bear spray during altercations.

Over the past several months, officers have responded to a number of incidents involving young persons engaged in assaults, group conflicts, and weapons-related offences. Of particular concern is the growing trend of youth carrying and deploying bear spray in disputes. Since March 3, police have responded to five incidents, with three youths facing charges.

Bear spray-related incidents have steadily increased each year between 2021 and 2025, representing a 115 per cent rise over the past five years. Youth aged 10 to 19 account for approximately 63 per cent of identified offenders. The most frequently reported offence involving bear spray is assault with a weapon.

Bear spray is designed as a wildlife deterrent and contains a highly concentrated irritant. When discharged in public spaces such as schools, malls, transit, or residential areas, it can cause significant respiratory distress, temporary blindness, panic, and serious safety risks to bystanders. When used against another person, bear spray is considered a weapon under the Criminal Code and may result in criminal charges.

While most youth in Hamilton make positive choices and contribute meaningfully to our community, the recent increase in violence highlights the need for proactive education, prevention, and enforcement.

In response to this trend, Hamilton Police have launched Project Breathe Easy, a targeted initiative aimed at reducing bear spray-related violence in the community.

Project Breathe Easy includes increased enforcement and high-visibility patrols in identified hotspot areas, proactive engagement with youth, compliance checks at retailers selling bear spray to ensure adherence to applicable legislation and responsible sales practices and ongoing monitoring and intelligence-led response to emerging concerns. The initiative combines enforcement with education to address both access and misuse.

“We don’t see a lot of bears walking around Hamilton. The reality is, we don’t have a bear problem — we have a youth safety problem that needs to be addressed,” says Chief Frank Bergen. “We’re not here to alarm families — we’re here to support them. At the same time, we are taking enforcement action where necessary to keep our community safe.”

Community Information Sessions

In addition to enforcement efforts, Hamilton Police are hosting a series of community information sessions aimed at parents and caregivers.

The sessions will focus on:

• Current youth violence trends
• The risks and legal implications of bear spray misuse
• Warning signs parents should be aware of
• How social media contributes to conflict escalation
• Strategies for prevention and early intervention
• Available community and mental health resources

Both in-person and virtual sessions will be offered to ensure accessibility for families across Hamilton. The virtual session will include breakout rooms in Arabic, Urdu, and French to support inclusive community dialogue.

Hamilton Police emphasize that youth violence prevention requires collaboration between families, schools, community organizations, retailers, and law enforcement.

Early conversations at home, awareness of peer dynamics and online activity, and engagement in positive activities are among the strongest protective factors for young people.

“These sessions are about education, prevention, and accountability,” adds Inspector Frank Miscione. “We want parents to feel informed and supported, and we want youth to understand there are real consequences when weapons are brought into conflicts.”

Hamilton Police are issuing a warning after fentanyl-laced gummies were found during a recent warrant.  These dangerous substances, disguised as candy, pose a serious risk to public health and safety, particularly for youth who may unknowingly consume them.

What to Know:

• Fentanyl is a powerful opioid, up to 100 times stronger than morphine, and even a small amount can cause a fatal overdose.
• The fentanyl-laced gummies resemble regular candy, making them particularly dangerous for children and teens, as well as unsuspecting adults.
• The gummies are often brightly colored and packaged in ways that could easily be mistaken for legitimate, store-bought products.

Warning Signs of Fentanyl Exposure:

• Drowsiness or unresponsiveness
• Difficulty breathing
• Confusion or dizziness
• Slow or weak pulse

If you or someone you know displays any of these symptoms after consuming a product resembling gummies or candy, call 911 immediately. Time is critical in preventing a potential overdose.

Hamilton Police urge parents, caregivers, and teachers to be vigilant and speak with children and young adults about the dangers of ingesting unknown substances.

• Avoid accepting any candy or edibles from unknown sources.
• Monitor what your children bring home, especially if they have been at parties or events.

Project Odeon began after police discovered a clandestine laboratory during an overdose death investigation in November 2021 at a residence on Hamilton’s Mountain. Investigators subsequently suspected a link between this death, an earlier overdose resulting in hospitalization and a death at a Toronto condominium. These all occurred within days of each other.

Opioid addiction has resulted in significant and far-reaching impacts on Hamilton. Like many other communities across the GTHA, Hamilton has been grappling with the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic and declared a state of emergency in April 2023 related to homelessness, opioid addiction and mental health.

“As police, we have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of opioids. These substances have not only led to a surge in addictions and overdoses but have also strained our resources as we respond to calls for service. Through Project Odeon, we have made a significant dent in the production of opioids and we believe this will have an impact on public safety in our community,” says Superintendent Marty Schulenberg.

From January 1 to July 30, 2023, there have been 606 incidents related to suspected opioid overdoses and 89-suspected drug-related deaths in Hamilton. These numbers have been steadily rising over the past five years.

“We are encouraged by the outcome of many long hours of investigatory work and thank our law enforcement partners for their continued commitment to reducing the production and distribution of drugs in Hamilton. Ultimately, the seizure of these opioids contributes to reducing the harms associated with opioid use for those who use substances, their family and friends, and the broader community,” says Julie Prieto, Director, Hamilton Public Health Services Epidemiology and Wellness Division.

By tracing the origins of some of the lab equipment, investigators were able to identify a company in the United States. This business sold three items of laboratory equipment to an Oshawa-based company. From here, investigators were able to piece together an extended drug network.

Warrants were executed in Hamilton, Mount Albert, Smithville, Toronto, Whitchurch-Stouffville, and Vaughan.

In total, investigators seized the following items:

• An operational fentanyl drug lab at 6800 Sixteen Road, Smithville.
• A dismantled fentanyl drug lab at 4057 Bethesda Road, Stouffville.
• Approximately 3.5 tons of chemical byproduct from fentanyl production.
• 800 gallons of chemicals commonly used in the production of fentanyl
• Lab equipment commonly used in the production of fentanyl
• 64.1 kg of illicit drugs, including 25.6 kg of fentanyl, 18 kg methamphetamine, 6 kg of ketamine
• A loaded, Glock firearm and ammunition and four extended magazines
• Over $350,000 of seized proceeds, including cars, jewelry, furniture and cash

The following 12 individuals have been charged through Project Odeon. To date, there are 48 criminal charges. Charges include possession for the purpose of trafficking, production of substance, proceeds of crime, firearm possession and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is aware of the charges to Cindy Ly. There is also a Canada-wide warrant for 34-year-old Kien Trung Hoang from Toronto.

“Dismantling a clan lab requires up to 50 personnel from police, fire, EMS, the Ontario Fire Marshall and Health Canada. Through Project ODEON, we were able to assist the Hamilton Police Service in safely dismantling not one, but two, clandestine labs. This investigation has had a significant impact on reducing harms and improving public safety,” said Ontario Provincial Police Detective Superintendent Paula Milne.

At approximately 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2023, Hamilton Police responded to 322 Jones Road in Stoney Creek and found two deceased victims. A 27-year-old female and 28-year-old male were both tenants at the residence.

The 57-year-old landlord barricaded himself in the residence with firearms that were registered to him. Hamilton Police Emergency Response Unit contained the area, while negotiators engaged in contact with the male in an attempt to peacefully resolve the incident.

At one point during the negotiations, the suspect fired at the Hamilton Police armoured vehicle. The suspect later fired additional rounds, which resulted in an interaction with police.

The Special Investigations Unit has been contact and has invoked their mandate. There is no longer a threat to public safety.

Families of both victims have been notified. At this time, the victims’ names will not be released.

On Sunday, February 5, 2023, police received multiple calls that a large truck had crashed into the Ezee Clean Car WashCarwash located at Highway 8 and Green Road.  

During the incident, the suspects intentionally hit a male witness with their vehicle causing serious injuries.  The suspects fled and remain outstanding.

Hamilton Police are continuing to process the scene, speak to witnesses and review video.  Please expect police presence in the area for the next 48 hours.   

Police are asking motorists and businesses to check their video between the hours of 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.  We are looking for video of the suspect vehicle, which is described as a dark-coloured, two-door, Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck.

On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a woman was walking in the area of Upper Paradise and Donnici Drive when she was approached by an unknown male and dragged off the trail. The male proceeded to assault her, but was interrupted by witnesses walking by the area. The male then fled on foot southbound towards Upper Paradise and was later seen on video in the area of Edgehill Dr.

“This was a violent daytime assault and we need the public’s help in identifying the suspect before he acts again. We encourage anyone who may recognize him to contact police or CrimeStoppers. Thankfully, witnesses were able to intervene during the attack otherwise we could have been dealing with different outcomes,” says Detective Sergeant Jennifer Currie.

Police have information that the suspect may attend or have recently graduated a high school in the area. Staff and students at local high schools are encouraged to review the image and contact investigators if they recognize him.

Hamilton Police are also aware of several incidents that have occurred on Hamilton trails since June 2022. As a result, of these incidents the Hamilton Police Service has deployed extra resources to increase police presence on area trails to help ensure community safety.

• Black sweater/jacket tied around his waist (or carrying)
• Black COVID mask (worn up and underneath his mouth/chin)

Given the unprovoked nature of the attack, Hamilton Police are encouraging the public to take extra precautions when accessing trails or walking paths within the city. Please consider the following safety tips:

Argyll, who became a member of the Mounted Unit in May 2020, was a seven-year-old Percheron Cross. He was named after The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise’s), which honoured the close connection between the Hamilton Police Service and the local regiment.

“Argyll was one of the smartest horses I have ever worked with. He was brave, confident, curious and a perpetual child. He was constantly getting into things and kept those working with him on our toes. He was an excellent horse to work with and he quickly settled into policing,” says Sergeant Denise Leonard.

Due to Argyll’s playful nature, he was a hit with the Mounted Unit and he will be greatly missed. His death comes soon after the retirement of Barron, who hung up his reins after nearly a decade on the job.

The Mounted Patrol Unit was established in January 2010 as an operational police unit and its mandate is to offer high visibility policing, crowd management and active crime prevention in Hamilton. The unit also works closely with the ACTION Team to respond to areas identified by hotspot analysis that require focused proactive patrol.

Just after 10:00 a.m., Hamilton Police received a 911 call for a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road on the Hamilton Mountain. Dispatchers issued an all car broadcast requesting patrol officers to look out for the vehicle.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., a 78-year-old male was struck on Park Avenue South at Markland Street. He was transported to hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver fled the scene and was arrested on Elmwood Avenue near Garth Street. Three police officers and the accused were taken to hospital for injuries. SIU has now invoked their mandate as a result of the injury incurred during the arrest.

On Friday, August 6, 2021, at approximately 7:30 p.m., a shooting occurred in the rear parking lot at 288 Mud Street West, Hamilton. Two suspects approached three individuals who were standing in the parking lot and fired several shots at them.

A 17-year-old male sustained critical injuries and was pronounced deceased in hospital, while a 35-year-old male sustained life-altering injuries. A 25-year-old male was treated for his injuries and has since been released.

At this time, the name of the victim is not being released pending next of kin notification.

The Hamilton Police Major Crime Unit is looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information about what took place. Investigators believe this was a targeted shooting.

On June 13, 2021 at 6:46 p.m., Hamilton Police Service and Hamilton Paramedic Service responded to an unconscious male on the second floor hallway of 737 Barton Street East, Hamilton. The male, believed to be in his 50s, had signs of blunt force trauma and was transported to the Hamilton General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Witnesses report a verbal altercation that occurred inside the building prior to the discovery of the male victim by other tenants of the premise. At this time, investigators do not have any suspect(s) descriptions available. The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed.

Police will be in the area throughout the day today and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

The victim of this homicide is identified as 38-year-old David Anderson of Hamilton.

Investigators believe Anderson was the victim of a robbery.

Detectives are releasing a short video of four suspects fleeing the scene of the shooting in an alleyway just west of Chestnut Ave. These suspects can only be described as four males at this time. These suspects were last observed running eastbound from Gibson Street toward Chestnut Avenue.

Launched in December 2020, Project STRONG was created in response to an increase in shootings and violent crime. Last year, there were 51 shootings in Hamilton, including 21 shootings that took place between September-December.

“This project reflected a whole of service approach. Everyone from Patrol to our Guns and Gangs Unit were equipped with information to identify the individuals responsible for the increase in Hamilton’s gun violence,” said Deputy Chief Frank Bergen. “The name Project Strong truly reflected the outcome we were looking to achieve – Stopping Targeted Retaliation of Neighbourhood Gangs.”

Since beginning Project STRONG, there has been a significant decrease in the number of retaliatory shootings between members of low level street gangs and drug traffickers. From January to March 2021, there have been six shooting in Hamilton.

Project STRONG specifically targeted any area in Hamilton with a noted increase in shootings or increased drug trafficking. As a result of the investigation, police seized:

• 23 firearms
• 880+ rounds of ammunition
• 23 weapons
• $350,000 in currency (approximately)
• 4.6 kg cocaine
• 2.5 kg fentanyl
• 645 g MDMA
• 1 kg psilocybin (mushrooms)
• 1.5 kg crystal meth
• 8.6 g heroin
• Over 13,000 pills such as Xanax, ecstasy, oxycodone, codeine, hydromorphone
• 6 kg marijuana
• 1100 ml GHB and Codeine liquid
• 900 packages of THC related products
• dozens of unknown pills for testing
• 6.3 kg of suspected cutting agent

The total street value of the drugs is estimated at $1.8 million. Over the course of the project, there were also 112 individuals charged, 831 charges laid, as well as 87 warrants on residences and vehicles.

Project STRONG reaffirmed the connection between violence, drug activity and guns in the Hamilton community. It also showed a strong presence of low level street gangs that are increasingly using firearms as a means to intimidate others and protect themselves and their product.

“Thanks to Project STRONG, multiple shootings across Hamilton have been resolved and multiple firearms have been seized. This is not the end. We will continue to engage with our community, police partners and leverage our internal networks to share information in order to provide community safety throughout Hamilton,” said Bergen.

On February 28, 2021, just after 7:15 p.m., the Hamilton Police Service responded to a shooting that occurred in the area of 347 Arvin Avenue, Stoney Creek. A 26-year-old female was located suffering from serious injuries and transported to hospital. The female remains in hospital in serious condition as she receives medical care. A 39-year-old male was subsequently located deceased at the location. He has been identified as Tyler Pratt of British Columbia. 

The Hamilton Police Service Major Crime Unit believe that the suspect(s) involved left in a new model white Land Rover SUV.

Investigators are requesting members of the community who were travelling on Arvin Avenue or Barton Street East between Fruitland Road and Green Road between 7:00 p.m. to 7:20 p.m. to contact police with any information, dash cam or security video recordings.

Investigators are continuing to establish the motive behind the incident and urge those with information to come forward to speak with police.

Police are further requesting the assistance of the public for any information that may relate to the suspect(s) and the suspect vehicle involved.

On Sunday, February 7, 2021, shortly after 12:00 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to the Hasty Market located at 387 Barton Street East for a robbery.

Through investigation, police learned a lone male entered the Hasty Market, approached the counter and demanded cash. The suspect then stated he had a weapon however a weapon was never observed.

The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and fled eastbound on foot.

No one was physically injured during this incident.

Investigators from the BEAR Unit are appealing for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect in the investigation.

The victim was attacked from behind by three male suspects while a fourth person remained in a nearby vehicle. One of the male suspects sprayed the victim with a substance similar to bear spray.

After the assault, all three suspects fled to the nearby vehicle. The vehicle then fled the scene.

The victim received treatment for minor injuries, including the irritant that was sprayed.

The vehicle involved is a four door black Ford Fusion, approximately 2010, with winter tires on the front and regular tires on the rear.

Detectives are appealing to the public, in the identification of the three suspects.

The irritant was sprayed on the victim by suspect three.

Hamilton Police have arrested and charged a 33-year-old female from Hamilton for an attempted murder on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. A 27-year-old male is also wanted in connection with the incident.

At approximately 11:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, a 30 year-old male attended 646 Main Street East, which was a residence of an acquaintance.

When he was invited inside, the victim was viciously attacked by the assailants.

Two of the individuals involved in the attack stole the victim’s keys and left the area in the victim’s white Acura sedan.

Another individual attended the residence as the beating was taking place and attempted to intervene but he was unable to assist.

A 9-1-1 call was generated due to the disturbance.This male was arrested near the scene as it was initially believed that he was involved. Upon further investigation, it was determined he was a witness to this crime and he was released unconditionally.

When police attended the scene, one of the assailants jumped out a window to escape.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he underwent lifesaving surgery. He is still listed as being in critical condition.

The 33-year-old female resident from the apartment, Madeleine Peternel, also known as Madeleine Divers returned to the scene and was arrested.

She has been charged with Attempted Murder and Robbery. She appeared in a Hamilton court this afternoon and has been remanded into custody.

An arrest warrant for Attempted Murder and Robbery has been issued for 27 year-old Jason Anthony Long.

Long is known to police.

He had a shaved head on the sides with longer hair on top, Mohawk style, at the time of the offence. He has sleeve tattoos on his arms, a teardrop tattoo under his right eye and tattoos on both sides of his neck.The weapons that were used in the attack have not all been recovered at this time.

Jason Long is considered dangerous.If seen, members of the public are encouraged to call 9-1-1. Do not approach.

The victim’s stolen white Acura, TLX is now missing its front bumper and is outstanding.

The scene at Main Street East and Burris Street is being maintained as investigators are currently executing a search warrant.

On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at approximately 10:00 a.m., a lone male suspect entered the King & James Convenience Store, located at 1 King Street East. The suspect told the clerk that he was in possession of a firearm and to hand over cash.

The suspect did not obtain any money and was last seen fleeing on foot westbound on King Street East.

Although a firearm was mentioned, one was not seen.

The employee did not incur any physical injuries as a result of the incident.

The Hamilton Police Break Enter and Robbery Unit has taken over the investigation and seeks assistance from the public with identifying the suspect.

Hamilton Police confirm the 17th homicide of 2020 after a 42-year-old male succumbed to his injuries sustained on December 13.

On Sunday, December 13, 2020, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Hamilton Police received a 9-1-1 call for reports of a male being stabbed by unknown suspect(s) in the area of East 27th Street and Concession Street in Hamilton. Police responded and located the 42-year-old male suffering from serious injuries. The male victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.

The 42-year-old male victim has been identified as Michael White of Hamilton. Michael has been a life-long resident of Hamilton. He is deeply missed by his family and friends. His family are requesting privacy at this time as they grieve the loss of their son, father and grandfather. Michael was a father of two children ages 24 and 16 and grandfather to a 2-year-old grandson and a 3-year-old granddaughter.

The homicide investigation is ongoing and detectives continue to review video and conduct interviews. The suspects were last seen travelling southbound from the crime scene in a blue or dark coloured SUV-style vehicle described as a blue Kia cube. Investigators have since located and seized a Kia motor vehicle believed to be involved in this homicide.

Officers from the Gangs and Weapons Unit seized a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun, illicit drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash at a mountain area residence.

On Friday, November 27, 2020, members of the Hamilton Police Gangs and Weapons Unit were conducting surveillance at a property in the area of Stone Church Road East and Upper Wentworth Street. Investigators had received a judicial authorization to search that property and a vehicle associated to it. At that time, the suspect was observed exiting the residence and placing a satchel in the vehicle. Officers approached the male and arrested him without incident. The warrant to search the vehicle and property was subsequently executed.

As a result of the searches, police seized a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun, powered and crack cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash

Malik Lutu was taken into police custody and his matter was addressed at the John Sopinka Courthouse on November 28, 2020. His charges are based on several firearm and drug-related offences.

On July 26, 2020, just shortly before 2:00 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to 3063 Binbrook Rd. in Binbrook for reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, police located 20-year-old Brock Beck suffering from stab wounds. Brock was transported to the hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. A 16-year-old youth was also injured in the attack but was treated at the hospital and released.

Three suspects have been arrested and charged with 2nd Degree murder and Assault Causing Bodily Harm in relation to the assault on the youth.

These accused will appear later today at the John Sopinka Couthourse in Hamilton.

The accused were located and arrested throughout the day yesterday in a coordinated effort by various units within the police service. These arrests were made in both the City of Hamilton and the City of Brantford without incident.

On Sunday, July 26, 2020, just shortly before 2:00 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to 3063 Binbrook Road, in Binbrook for reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival police located the victim, Brock Beck, 20-years-old suffering injuries from a stabbing attack. Brock was transported to the hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. A 16-year-old youth was also injured in the attack, but was treated at the hospital and quickly released.

Through investigation, police believe the suspects pulled up behind Brock's vehicle just prior to 2:00 am and confronted him and his friend in the driveway of the residence. Investigators also believe that Brock's murder was a result of a road rage incident gone wrong.

Since July, detectives from the Major Crime Unit continue to investigate the murder of Brock Beck and urge those with information to come forward to speak with police

Today, the Beck family is announcing that they are offering $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Brock Beck. These are funds that have been privately raised by the Beck family.

On Monday, November 9, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to the area of York Blvd and Queen St. North, for a street disturbance call. Upon police arrival, they found a 46-year-old female victim suffering from serious injuries. Divisional Detectives began their investigation into the assault which sent this woman to hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators have discovered that the victim was violently attacked with a large stick without provocation. The victim did not know her attacker and there was no known connection between the two. Detectives obtained video surveillance in the area and were able to obtain a description for area patrol units.

Later the same evening, police would respond to numerous disturbance calls where a male suspect was randomly attacking people in the city. This male suspect was eventually located and arrested by patrol units in the area of Jackson and MacNab St.

This male suspect was later identified by police and arrested for the attack on the 46 year-old female earlier in the evening.

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on November 10, witnesses located the lifeless body of  29-year-old  Andrew Ainscow of Hamilton. He was located in an alleyway just west of James St. S. between Duke and Bold Streets. Ainscow was stabbed to death in the alleyway.

The Major Crime Unit was contacted shortly after 7:00 a.m. and took carriage of the homicide investigation. Homicide Investigators from the Major Crime Unit continue to investigate this homicide. During the course of the investigation, homicide detectives reviewed the incident at York and Queen St. with Divisional Detectives. After video was obtained, The Major Crime unit assumed carriage of this incident and have charged the following person with attempted murder:

• Keith Allan Overholt, 38-years-old of No Fixed Address

Police continue to ask residents in the area to check their surveillance systems. Canvassing for witnesses will continue throughout the day.

In mid-June 2020, Hamilton Police received a report of a commercial break and enter to an automotive business in the east end of Hamilton. During the incident, a Ford F150 pick-up truck was stolen. Over the course of four months, several commercial entries took place in the Hamilton area. The Hamilton Bear Unit has continued to investigate these incidents and has established a connection. The pick-up truck stolen from the June entry is believed to be involved in four commercial entries:

• August 23, 2020, entry to a business on Stonechurch Road East where a large number of vacuum cleaners and home healthcare items were stolen.

• August 26, 2020, entry to a pharmacy on Queenston Road in Stoney Creek. Pharmaceutical drugs and products valued in the area of $100,000 were stolen.

• September 24, 2020, entry to a car dealership on Upper James Street. Tools and automotive supplies were stolen.

• October 16, 2020, entry to a business in the Nebo Road area. A large quantity of sanitizer and cleaning supplies were stolen.

On Wednesday November 4, 2020, members of the Hamilton Police Service executed search warrants at two residences located in the east end of Hamilton and Hannon, Ontario. Located inside the residences were two shotguns, ammunition, over $100,000 in stolen pharmaceuticals, approximately $100,000 in stolen property and a quantity of cocaine. The items were all seized as evidence.

During the course of the investigation three adults were arrested. Their matter was brought before the court system on Wednesday, November 4, where they faced numerous charges related to firearms, commercial entries and possession of stolen property and drugs.

This investigation remains ongoing and detectives anticipate proceeding with additional arrests and criminal charges.

On Monday, October 19, 2020, shortly before 9:25 p.m., a lone male suspect attended the Hasty Market located at 387 Barton Street East. At the time, he was in possession of a black handgun and he demanded cash from the store clerk. The suspect was able to obtain an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency and then fled on foot, eastbound on Barton Street.

The victim did not receive any physical injuries during the incident.

On Tuesday, September 8, 2020, a worker in the area spotted what appeared to be a body floating in Hamilton Harbour at Pier 11. Hamilton Police responded, and with the assistance of Hamilton Fire, recovered the body. The body had been in the water for a prolonged period of time and was sent to the Centre for Forensic Sciences for identification.

The Centre for Forensic Sciences has now confirmed the remains are of missing person Holly Ellsworth-Clark.

Holly was last seen on January 11, 2020, by her roommates at her home. Before she left her residence, Holly appeared to be suffering from some distress but was otherwise healthy and athletic. Hamilton Police and Holly’s family conducted a thorough investigation including ground search, social media posts and continued to follow up on various leads and tips with negative results.

Hamilton Police would like to thank the public for assistance during the search for Holly. From sharing video surveillance to putting up missing person posters, the community rallied around Holly and her family.

Holly’s family has been notified of the results. Today’s news was not the outcome her family and Hamilton Police were hoping to receive. Hamilton Police do not believe Holly’s death is suspicious in nature. Thank you to The National Centre for Missing Person and Unidentified Remains, the Centre for Forensic Sciences and the DNA Database for all their assistance in bringing closure to this case.

Hamilton Police are asking residents and businesses to check their surveillance cameras between the hour of 1:30 am and 2:30 am for any vehicles travelling on Binbrook Road. Beck's vehicle is a 2011 grey Ford Fusion. The suspects in the attack are believed to have been driving a vehicle closely behind Beck's vehicle. The suspect vehicle can only be described as a four-door sedan at this time.

There is no known motive at this time for this murder and police continue to investigate. Police believe the suspects pulled up behind Beck's vehicle just prior to 2:00 am and confronted Beck and his friend in the driveway of the residence. It is unknown how many suspects are involved and there is no description at this time. Investigators are hopeful that an image of the suspect vehicle will be captured at which time it will be released to the public for assistance in identifying.

Shortly after 4:00 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to a 911 call on St. Matthews Avenue. Upon arriving, police located a 17-year-old female with a gunshot wound. She was transported to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Hamilton Police are searching for two male persons of interest that were seen fleeing the scene. The males are believed to be in their early twenties. One may have a short brown buzz cut, while the other male has long brown hair. The males exited the rear of the residence and fled down an alleyway in an unknown direction.

There were approximately five people in the residence at the time of the shooting and police are still looking to speak to all witnesses. Police are also applying for search authority to enter the residence.

At this time, the motive for the shooting is not known.

The firearm remains outstanding. Police will be in the area canvassing door-to-door for witnesses and any surveillance footage captured early this morning. A search team will be combing the area looking for the firearm. Residents are also encouraged to thoroughly search their property in case the weapon has been tossed or concealed.

The family has requested privacy and time to grieve their loss. The victim’s name will not be released.

On July 10, 2020, just prior to 9:25 p.m. two vehicles were travelling southbound on the RHVP. While still in motion, multiple shots were fired from one vehicle, a dark coloured SUV, into the second vehicle, a blue BMW sedan. As a result, two individuals were struck by the gunshots that resulted in serious injuries to one occupant and the death of 27-year-old Matar Abouchere. Matar was driving the vehicle at the time of the shooting and was able to bring the vehicle to a stop on the shoulder of the roadway. The suspect(s) fled from the scene in the dark coloured SUV, exiting the RHVP at Greenhill Avenue. The vehicle driven by Matar Abouchere entered onto the RHVP from the Barton Street East westbound lanes.

Investigators are requesting members of the community who were travelling on Barton Street East, the RHVP or the area of Greenhill Avenue around the approximate time of this incident to contact police with any information, dashcam or security video recordings.

Investigators are continuing to establish the motive behind the murder of Matar Abouchere and urge those with information to come forward to speak with police.

Police are further requesting the assistance of the public for any information that may relate to the suspect(s) and the suspect vehicle involved.

Police arrived on scene four minutes after the 911 call and located the male victim on the ground bleeding in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Officers immediately began CPR and attempted life-saving measures. Hamilton Paramedics arrived on scene quickly and assisted police. The victim was transported to the Hamilton General Hospital by ambulance.

Medical staff continued the life-saving attempts, however, the 44-year-old male victim was pronounced deceased just before 11:30 p.m. This marks the city's 6th homicide of the year.

Hamilton Police have contained the crime scene in the parking lot of 334 East 14th St. Officers will be in the area for most of today canvassing. If you live in the immediate area, police are asking that you check your video surveillance between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 11:20 p.m. for anything unusual or suspicious. Investigators will also be canvassing for any potential video.

The investigation is in its infancy and as such, there is no suspect(s) description to release at this time.

The victim's name will not be released at this time. Investigators have briefly spoken with the victim's family, however, they require time to notify other next of kin.

The Mounted Patrol Unit was established in January 2010 as an operational police unit and its mandate is to offer high visibility policing, crowd management and active crime prevention in Hamilton. The unit also works closely with the ACTION Team to respond to areas identified by hotspot analysis that require focused proactive patrol.

In late March, officers from the Hamilton Police Vice and Drugs Unit concluded a drug investigation into this Ancaster man. That resulted in his arrest, a large seizure of drugs and cash and a charge under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act for ‘Failure to comply with an order given during a declared emergency.’

The Hamilton Police Vice and Drugs Unit continued their investigation into this Ancaster man, accumulating more information regarding his ongoing drug trafficking.

On Thursday, April 30, 2020, warrants were granted for a residence in the area of Golf Links Road and Meadowlands Boulevard, storage units in the area of Stone Church Road East and Dartnall Road and Appleby Line and Mainway, Burlington. Warrants were also issued for motor vehicles affiliated to the Ancaster man.

With assistance from the Investigative Services Division and the Division 30 Heat Unit, police seized illicit drugs, firearms, ammunition and a large amount of cash.

Nickolas and Marija Deschenes were arrested and taken into police custody without incident.

Nickolas Deschenes made a bail court appearance on Saturday, May 2, 2020, to answer to several charges.

Marija Deschenes is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, to answer to several charges.

On Saturday, January 11, 2019, shortly after 4:30 a.m., Hamilton Police received a report of a break and enter in progress at H&Z Diamond Centre, located at 1142 Wilson Street West, Ancaster. Officers immediately responded to the scene: however, the parties involved had already fled the scene.

Through continued investigation, detectives from the Bear Unit have learned a black and white pick-up truck was used to damage the structure allowing the suspects to enter the store and remove over $43,000 in various jewellery items.

Hamilton Police have collected surveillance footage which captured the vehicle involved along with one of the suspects.

Over the past year, the investigation has taken several directions. Detectives have exhausted efforts in attempting to identify the parties responsible and are now seeking assistance from the public.

A white 2015-2017 four-door Chrysler 200 with a panoramic sunroof was last seen travelling eastbound on Gordon, south on Lincoln and west on Barton. Police believe there was more than one individual in the car and the driver was waiting while the shooter fired multiple shots into the house.

The child is still recovering from his injuries.

The family has been cooperating with police but there has been varying degrees of cooperation from the other individuals in the residence at the time. Police believe there are people who know what happened and continue to encourage those individuals to come forward.

Hamilton Police continue to investigate two overnight street robberies where high-end jackets were the target. Hamilton has seen a rash in street robberies involving high-end jackets over the past several months. Arrests have been made and police are asking the public to be aware of their surroundings at all times and to report incidents immediately.

On the evening of Monday, January 6, 2019, Hamilton Police received reports of two robberies.

Shortly after 7: 00 p.m., an individual was walking in the area of James Street North and Rebecca Street when he was approached by a group of young males. The victim was assaulted and his Moose Knuckle coat along with other personal property was taken as the suspects fled on foot.

The victim did not require medical attention.

The suspects are described as male youths with darker complexions.

Shortly before midnight, a second victim met up with two suspects in the area of Pier 8. An arrangement was made in advance through a social media app to sell a Moncler bomber jacket. Once in the company of the suspects, the jacket was handed over to try on. The victim was then threatened and the suspects fled with the jacket.

The victim did not require medical attention.

The suspects are described as male youths, one being Caucasian and the other black with a light complexion.

Hamilton Police have made arrests in relation to a high-end jacket street robbery that occurred in late December. Two males appeared in court today.

On Monday, December 23, 2019, at approximately 11:00 p.m., the victim and friend were in the area of King Street and James Street when they were approached by three males, one male was in possession of a weapon. The victim was assaulted by the males and his jacket was taken from him. The suspects fled on foot.

Through investigation, police identified and arrested two males in relation to the robbery. They appeared in court earlier today to answer to several criminal charges. The third male remains outstanding and police continue to investigate the incident.

• Do not walk alone, especially after dark

Hamilton Police also urge anyone who has a high-end jacket to take steps to personalize their coat with identifying information. This could include sewing in a coloured label or placing an identifiable mark somewhere inside the jacket and if possible, take a photo for reference. This will assist police in returning recovered stolen items to their owners.

On Sunday, December 29, 2019, shortly after midnight, Hamilton Police responded to the area of Lexington Avenue and Columbus Gate after receiving information about a suspicious incident. During the investigation, police reviewed security footage which captured a motor vehicle travelling south on Lexington when a female exited while it was in motion. The vehicle stopped and two male occupants exited and assisted the woman back into the vehicle. It was last seen travelling east on Columbus Gate. The vehicle is described as a newer model, white, four-door sedan with a sunroof.

The Hamilton Police Service is asking the public to review the photos and to contact police if they recognize any of the individuals or vehicle.

At this time police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to check on the well-being of all persons involved.

Further, on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, Hamilton Police laid additional charges against Alaa Al Soufi. Mr Al Soufi was previously arrested and charged on October 23rd, 2019. These additional charges were as a result of witnesses coming forward and the review of further video evidence.

Hamilton Police are investigating a double homicide after the bodies of a male and female were found in a Central Mountain townhouse on Saturday evening. 

On Saturday, November 2, 2019, Hamilton Police were called to an address on the Central Mountain early Saturday evening to check on the well-being of the residents. Upon arrival, Hamilton Police discovered a deceased adult male and an adult female, both had been shot. Police believe the victims were targeted. 

At this time, Hamilton Police are not releasing the names pending next of kin notification.

Hamilton Police have identified a suspect and are actively searching for 35-year-old David Thomson. He is a white male, 6'1 and approximately 190 pounds. He is considered armed and dangerous. He may be driving a gray 2013 Dodge Ram pickup with licence AX70104 or a black 2014 GM Sierra with licence plate AY43816.

Divisional Detectives continued the investigation and on Wednesday, September 18, the suspect vehicle and driver were located in the area of Upper Wentworth Street and Fennell Avenue East. The driver resisted arrest but was taken into custody without injury to himself or the officer. The vehicle was seized by police and he was searched and found to be in possession of a controlled substance at the time of his arrest.

Hamilton Police applied for a search a warrant and on Friday, September 20, 2019, the warrant was executed on the vehicle. A Daisey Powerline 340 Pellet gun was seized as well as cocaine.

On Thursday, August 9, 2019, at approximatley 3:00 p.m., Hamilton Police Officers observed two males exit a vehicle which had just parked beside a motorcycle in the area of Catherine Street North and Murray Street. After exiting the vehicle one of the males started the motorcycle with a vice grip. Observing this suspicious activity police subsequently detained the two males and began an investigation. As a result, one of the males was arrested for an outstanding warrant and police learned the motorcycle was stolen. The second male was arrested for possession of the stolen property.

The investigation led to the seizure of one (1) kilogram of Methamphetamine and a quantity of Cocaine. As a result of the investigation, police have charged a total of four people with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property and proceeds of crime. They were all taken into police custody and held for a bail hearing.

The investigation remains open as police continue to review the evidence seized and additional charges could be laid at a later date.

On Tuesday, August 6, 2019, shortly before midnight, a Hamilton Police Officer on proactive patrol was in the area of Caroline Street and Jackson Street West when a couple walking along Caroline was observed acting in a suspicious manner. The male was carrying a brown knapsack as he entered a parked Volkswagen Jetta on the driver’s side and the female entered the front passenger area. An investigation into the vehicle licence plate confirmed the registered owner was a suspended driver from Brantford Ontario.

A traffic stop was conducted near the intersection stated above and the driver provided the necessary driving documents. It was confirmed he was not the registered owner of the vehicle; however, his licence had been suspended as well by the Ministry of Transportation. An investigation into the female confirmed her identity and the fact the driver was bound by a court order that prohibited him from being in her company. The driver was arrested for the court violation. During the search of the male, police located brass knuckles in his possession. The knapsack he was carrying was searched as well and police located several items which included illicit drugs, another prohibited weapon, cell phones etc. The knapsack and its contents were seized for evidence.

The 36-year-old Brantford man was taken into police custody and advised of the additional charges related to the items located in the knapsack along with violations to court orders. He is scheduled to appear in court today at the John Sopinka Courthouse to answer to the charges.

The vehicle was seized by police and will be turned over to the registered owner.

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, a 34-year-old woman from Hamilton provided the appropriate documents which were determined to be in order.

The driver was issued two court summons and is scheduled to appear on Monday, August 12, 2019, to answer to the charges of stunt driving and speeding.

In accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the driver’s licence has been suspended for seven days and the vehicle, a 2018 Mercedes GLC 300 was seized and will be impounded for the same period of time.

If found guilty in court, the penalties for stunt driving could include a fine between $2000 - $10,000, up to six months in jail and a two-year licence suspension.

Investigators with the Hamilton Police Vice and Drugs unit have seized over a million dollars and 7 kg worth of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl at an apartment complex near Upper Ottawa and Fennell Avenue during an investigation into mid-level drug trafficking.

On March 28, 2019, Hamilton Police were conducting surveillance at an apartment complex on the Mountain believed to be used to traffic drugs. During the surveillance, police witnessed the 34-year-old male suspect placing two bags in the trunk of a car. The individual was arrested and the bags were revealed to contain a large quantity of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl and purple heroin, as well as over 3,000 pills.

Hamilton Police also executed a warrant on an apartment within the complex. Inside, investigators found a cocaine press, blenders, scales and two large safes. One of the safes also contained a quantity of drugs.

Shortly after 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019, Hamilton Police Service executed a search warrant at an east end residence in relation to illegal drug activity. During the search, Hamilton Police seized a large quantity of Cocaine with a street value of $45,000, two replica firearms, ammunition, an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency and drug paraphernalia.

A 34-year-old Hamilton man has been arrested and will appear in court on Friday, March 22, 2019, to answer to drug and firearm-related charges.

On Friday, March 15, 2019, shortly after 5:30 a.m., Hamilton Police were made aware of suspicious activity in the area of King Street East and Sherman Avenue North involving males and a vehicle. Through investigation into the actions of the males, police obtained information to support the application for a search warrant.

A short time later, the Hamilton Police BEAR Unit executed a search warrant at the address. Police have recovered at approximately $85,000.00 in stolen tools manufactured by ‘Hilti’. It is believed the tools were stolen during a break and enter in the Greater Toronto Area.

Peter Murphy, 31-years-of-age from Hamilton has been charged with Possession over $5000.00. He appeared in court on Saturday, March 16, 2019.

The investigation remains open and Hamilton Police are appealing to the public for assistance.

Monica was last seen by a friend on July 11, 2018, in the area of Barton Street and Parkdale Avenue North in Hamilton. As a result of further investigation, the Major Crime Unit (MCU) has taken over this matter.

MCU has conducted an overall analysis of the disappearance of Monica Chisar leading investigators to believe that there is a chance foul play exists. However, it remains a possibility that Monica is alive and has simply chosen to disappear for reasons only known to her. Regardless, this matter warrants the further resources that the MCU can provide for this investigation.

We are therefore reminding the community about Monica and are encouraging anyone to come forward with information. Monica did not have much of a history in Hamilton but she had a wide circle of associates across the GTA. It is also believed that she had a connection to Kitchener, which is also of interest to us.
