Arrest Made in Catalytic Converter Theft Investigation

The Hamilton Police Service has arrested a 36-year-old male in relation to the catalytic converter thefts in the region. The investigation is ongoing and any victims who have yet to come forward are urged to contact police. Additional criminal charges are expected.

The Hamilton Police BEAR Unit has continued to investigate the rash of catalytic converter thefts in the region. Through investigation, police identified a suspect and on Thursday, October 10, 2019, police arrested a 36-year-old male in relation to the thefts. He was taken into police custody and held for a bail hearing.

The investigation remains open and additional charges are expected.

Hamilton Police are reminding vehicle owners to take precautions in order to lessen their chances of becoming a victim:

Park vehicle in well-lit areas
Park closer to pedestrian or vehicle traffic so it is not isolated
When possible, park in areas that utilize video surveillance

Catalytic Converter Thefts Rising in Hamilton

Hamilton Police are warning the public after a spike in the theft of catalytic converters in vehicles. A component of the exhaust system, catalytic converters contain high-value metal that is then sold at scrap metal yards.

Since May 2019, there have been 61 catalytic converters stolen in the Hamilton area. Most of the thefts have occurred overnight but some have been brazen daytime thefts where the suspect crawled under the vehicle and cut out the catalytic converter.

Larger-style SUVs appear to be the focus because of accessibility to the converter. The converter can be removed in less than two minutes. Parking lots such as malls, educational facilities and other commercial areas have been targeted.

It is important that you follow safety precautions in order to reduce your chances of becoming a victim.

Park vehicle in well-lit areas
Park closer to pedestrian or vehicle traffic so it is not isolated
Check if the area has video surveillance

If you notice a loud muffler-related noise and loss of engine power when starting your vehicle, contact police.
