In May 2025, incidents involving impaired driving increased by 25 percent compared to May 2024. In June 2025, the numbers were even more alarming, with a 53 percent rise. Overall, impaired driving in Hamilton is up 11 percent year-to-date compared to 2024.

Since the beginning of June, Hamilton has experienced three fatal collisions directly linked to alcohol impairment. Tragically, six lives were lost including the death of a 10-year-old child.

Hamilton Police would like to remind everyone that there are always alternatives to getting behind the wheel while impaired:

·         Designate a sober driver before heading out.

·         Call a taxi or use ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft.

·         Use public transit, where available.

·         Plan ahead—your life and others depend on it.

Hamilton Police also encourage the public to play a proactive role in road safety. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911 immediately. Your call could save a life.

As the summer continues, Hamilton Police will be increasing our Ride Lanes, not only on the road, but also on the water through the use of our Marine Unit.

On November 20, 2024 at approximately 4:40 PM, a male pulled a knife on two individuals at Jackson Square.

The male suspect, who had previously been trespassed from Jackson Square, had been located by security causing a scene within the premises. After some discussion, the male was eventually escorted off of the property by security.

Once outside, the male produced an edged weapon and took a combative stance towards security.

Officers from the Hamilton Police Service - Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team (MCRRT) arrived on scene and safely brought the event to an end. The male was taken into police custody and charged with the following:

• Assault with a Weapon x2

The weapon was seized, and no injuries were reported in this event.

For reference, MCRRT consists of mental health clinicians and uniform Police Officers who respond to emergent calls for service involving persons in acute crisis. The goal of MCRRT is to reduce the time patrol officers spend dealing with complex cases and to bring mental health expertise directly to the scene.

In 2023, MCRRT responded to 5,514 calls for service.

Hamilton Police are seeking the public’s assistance in gathering information regarding a recent home invasion.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at approximately 3:20 a.m., a group of masked suspects broke into a residence in the area of Highland Road West and Winterberry Drive while the occupants were home.

The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery before fleeing the scene in two vehicles:

A newer model white Honda Civic

An older model silver Honda CRV

During the escape, one of the suspects in the silver Honda CRV displayed a handgun to witnesses.

Police believe this incident was targeted and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Hamilton Police urge residents and businesses in the area to review any video surveillance footage from the timeframe of the incident. Your footage may provide valuable evidence to assist with the investigation.

Stolen Auto Investigation

Hamilton Police have arrested a 14-year-old after the discovery of a stolen auto over the weekend in Hamilton.

On Saturday, November 16, 2024 Hamilton Police officers were investigating a separate incident when they observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Gage Park.

When the officers approached the vehicle to gather more details, the occupant of the vehicle fled on foot and a chase ensued. The suspect was quickly apprehended and officers learned that the individual was breaching three release orders in addition to possessing a stolen vehicle.

The young person – who cannot be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act – now faces the following charges:

·         Possession over $5000.00

·         Fail to Comply Release Order x3

Vehicle thefts are an ongoing problem in the Hamilton area and the Hamilton Police Service is reminding the public to be mindful when leaving your vehicle for extended periods of time.

·         Always lock your vehicle doors and keep your keys in a safe place

·         Remember to remove high value items from plain sight

·         If possible, park in areas you know cameras and/or other community members to be

Community Involvement 
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of community involvement in making our city safer. Yesterday, we received a call from a concerned community member about an erratic driver on Upper James Street. This individual reported a vehicle speeding and repeatedly crossing into oncoming lanes for an extended distance on Upper James Street. Thanks to this vigilant community member, our officers were able to safely conduct a traffic stop at Fennell Avenue. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers detected a strong odour of marijuana and observed the driver exhibiting nervous behaviour. The driver then admitted to having a handgun in his pocket. As a result, a loaded Glock 26 was seized, along with a quantity of crack cocaine and scales found in the vehicle.

This incident underscores the vital role that community members play in enhancing safety. It highlights how a simple call can lead to significant outcomes, demonstrating that it truly takes everyone coming together to make a difference. The dedication and quick action of our officers, combined with the proactive involvement of our community, continue to make our streets safer.

Our Actions to Combat Gun Violence
We have recently made our dedicated Shooting Response Team a permanent fixture within our Service. This team is specifically trained and equipped to respond swiftly and effectively to incidents involving firearms. Their presence has already made a significant impact, and we are confident that their continued efforts will contribute to reducing gun-related crimes in Hamilton.

Last week, our efforts led to the successful seizure of multiple firearms on the Hamilton Mountain. You can read more about this investigation in our recent News Release.

In addition to the work of our Shooting Response Team, we are enhancing our community outreach and engagement initiatives. We are committed to fostering stronger relationships with community members and leaders to gather crucial information that can help prevent crimes before they occur. Our strategy includes increased patrols in high-risk areas, collaboration with local organizations, and the use of strategic policing partners to track and deter criminal activities.

Enhanced Offender Management Strategy
Furthermore, we have enhanced our Offender Management strategy to focus more intensely on serious repeat violent offenders with firearms. The recent C-48 Bail Reform, which came into effect this year, has provided us with additional tools to manage these offenders more effectively, ensuring that those who pose the greatest risk to our community are kept off the streets.

Community Involvement and Provincial Support
Addressing gun violence requires the active involvement of our entire community. This effort starts with engaging at-risk youth early in their lives, providing positive role models, and steering them away from a life of crime. We often face challenges due to a lack of witness support, which hampers our investigations. Therefore, we urge all community members to come forward with any information they might have, no matter how small it may seem. In addition, the Province of Ontario has been actively collaborating with us to address this issue. Hamilton Police are inviting individuals to join its Community Advisory Panel to advise on the development of a Race and Identity-Based Data Strategy (RIBD).

The RIBD strategy is focused on understanding and addressing police impact on racial inequalities, including differences in outcomes like use of force among racial groups, internal policies, and training practices.

"As Chief, I cannot stress enough the value of community involvement in shaping our Race and Identity-Based Data strategy. The establishment of a Community Advisory Panel (CAP) is a pivotal move towards better transparency and accountability,” said Chief Frank Bergen.

In 2020, Ontario's Ministry of the Solicitor General directed police to record the race of individuals in use-of-force incidents. This revealed a higher incident rate in communities such as Black, South East Asian, and Middle Eastern compared to benchmark populations. Guided by human rights and trauma-informed principles, Hamilton Police are developing a strategy for Race and Identity Based Data Collection (RIBD) in line with the 2017 Anti-Racism Act (ARA).

“It's crucial that community members bring their perspectives, expertise and lived-experience, to guide us in analyzing critical data on issues like use of force. Their input is not just welcome – it is essential for ensuring this approach is fair, effective, and truly reflective of the community's needs,” added Bergen.

The Community Advisory Panel will consist of 8-10 volunteer members who will play a key role in shaping the RIBD strategy. Their task is to infuse the strategy with perspectives, insights, and viewpoints to ensure it is well-rounded and actionable.

Interested individuals can apply to the Community Advisory Panel at www.hamiltonpolice.on.ca/RIBD. Applicants will be asked to fill out a survey application. Based on the weighted survey and diversity of the pool, successful applicants will be invited to a panel interview made up of community and Hamilton Police members. The procedure for setting up the Community Advisory Panel has undergone examination by two independent academic experts from McMaster.

Who Should Join?

• Individuals passionate about data, social justice and community service.
• Those with experience in human rights, procedural justice, and race and identity issues (i.e. racism, trauma, bias).
• Individuals with a diversity of perspective and representative of all backgrounds and positionalities (including; but not limited to, race, ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, disability, citizenship, and socio-economic status).  
• Community members eager to contribute to positive change in policing and public safety.

The Race and Identity-Based Data (RIBD) Strategy will assist the Hamilton Police Service to better understand and address racial disparities. It will also help the Service to identify ways to better support members in their delivery of fair and equitable service.

Hamilton Police will be holding a Race and Identity Based Community Information Session to learn more about the RIBD framework, the Community Advisory Panel and the path forward. The event will take place at the following date and location:

“We are deeply committed to this collaboration, recognizing that only by working together can we address and rectify racial disparities in policing," said Bergen.

On Monday, October 30, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Hamilton officers were patrolling the area of King Street East and East Avenue North in response to ongoing community complaints.

While patrolling the area, officers encountered an individual in an alleyway with conditions to stay out of the area. The individual attempted to flee on foot when approached by the officers, resulting in a brief struggle and subsequent arrest.

In a search incident to arrest, police located a loaded Glock 19 firearm, a box of 9mm ammunition, two pieces of crack cocaine, and a quantity of cash in the accused’s possession.

Hamilton Police have arrested  a 38-year-old man, Tim Junior Miller for the following charges;

• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
• Knowledge Possession of a Firearm
• Possession of a Loaded Restricted Firearm
• Possession For The Purpose Of Trafficking Cocaine
• Possession of Proceeds of Crime Under Five Thousand
• Three Counts of Fail to Comply Undertaking

The Hamilton Police Major Fraud Unit are investigating into multiple reports of fraudulent sales of collectible memorabilia.

In February 2021, the Hamilton Police Major Fraud Unit began an investigation into a number of frauds, involving the online sale of pro wrestling collectibles to victims outside of Canada.

Hamilton Police made an arrest on Monday, July 19, 2021, surrounding the investigation into the fraudulent sales.

Miranda is active on pro wrestling social media sites and uses his picture when conducted business but has been known to use multiple aliases.

Police believe there could be more victims.

911 operators are a vital link between the public and first responders by gathering critical details during the initial call. These details are fundamental to ensure that first responders have the appropriate amount of information to address the situation accordingly.

No one wants to be in a situation where you or someone is in immediate danger. Whether that situation is concerning, an immediate health concern, robbery, or a situation where your own life is on the line, who do you call?

There are a range of calls that operators and dispatchers receive. Calls can range from stabbings, robberies, suicide attempts and fatal crashes. Some calls become a routine, but some calls stay with you. For Gunn, this was a call that would be unforgettable.

“When we dispatch the call to another first responder, we stay on the line to ensure the situation is being addressed. I noticed that the man kept repeating himself, and wasn’t able to hear what the ambulance dispatcher was saying,” said Gunn. “I had to do something. I intercepted the call, informing the ambulance dispatcher that I would help and relay the information to the man.”

Operators are highly trained in emergency call taking and dispatching. They are calm and professional by providing support and information. Operators and dispatchers are trained in theoretical knowledge and practical training. Through post-secondary education, many learn the principles and skills that are critical in reacting competently and effectively when dealing with emergency services personnel as well as the public. Their knowledge comes from reality-based scenario training, giving them the confidence to perform under stressful conditions. Much of their training also comes from first-hand experience.

Gunn immediately instructed the distraught husband and reassured him that help was on the way. Gunn coached the elderly male on chest compressions, and kept the rhythm by counting out loud over the phone, in a clear and calm manner.

“In stressful situations, we all tend to lose our focus and I knew that I needed to reassure him that help was on the way. Sometimes you need to go above your training and do what you can to help, and sometimes you truly can save a life.”

If you wondered what it takes to manage calls, it requires patience, understanding and problem-solving all in an instant.

At Hamilton Police Service, all emergency calls come through to the communications branch. In 2017, Hamilton Police Service received a total of 367,725 calls. This also includes the 4,501 abandoned 9-1-1 calls that need to be called back. If the 9-1-1 operator does not get someone on the line, they treat it as an emergency, so it is important to stay on the line and tell the operator that you have made a mistake.

Being an operator and dispatcher is not an easy undertaking. It requires a lot of skill and strong multi-tasking abilities. You are dealing with a variety of information being thrown at you in highly stressful situations, and maintaining composure and reasoning is crucial in this field of work. It requires you to be diligent at all times because you can’t expect what kind of call is coming your way. For Danielle Gunn, she didn’t expect to have to relay CPR instructions over the phone to man in distress. But her quick actions provided compassion and first aid until emergency responders arrived on scene.

There are thousands of stories where the men and women who work in the telecommunications department have encountered an experience like Gunn’s. Operators and dispatchers are often behind the scenes but they are the brave individuals helping to serve and protect the community.

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, at approximately 10:00 p.m., police responded to reports of a large group causing mischief in the Durand neighbourhood. A group of about 30 individuals dressed in black clothing with their faces covered, walked through the streets carrying a banner that said, “We Are The Ungovernables.” The group began setting off fireworks, damaging vehicles and throwing rocks at store windows.

Police received further evidence linking the Anarchist Book Fair at Westdale Secondary School on March 3-4, 2018, to the events that took place on the evening of March 3, 2018.

As a result, Hamilton Police have arrested 31-year-old Peter Hopperton of Hamilton for “Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence.” Hopperton is expected to appear before the courts later today.

A search warrant was also executed at a Hamilton residence early this morning. The search of the residence is ongoing.

Bergen fills the Deputy Chief – Field Support position that has been vacant since March 2017. Bergen is a longtime Hamilton resident and a 35-year member from Toronto Police Service. He has diverse experience within the Toronto Police Service and has worked in community mobilization, court services and strategy management. He has focused on developing internal and external relationships to improve the quality of life and safety for all citizens within Toronto’s neighbourhoods.

“Anna and Frank will complete our Command team. Their tremendous experience and skillsets will be great assets as we begin developing our 2019-2021 business plan,” said Chief Eric Girt. “We look forward to welcoming them to Hamilton Police Service and seeing the contributions they’ll make within our community.”

Hamilton Police Service in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is holding a Gun Amnesty during the month of April.

The Gun Amnesty is for any Hamilton resident who wishes to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition.

The program provides citizens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety. During the amnesty, police will not recommend weapons-related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items. This does not apply to weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime.

This is the fourth amnesty held by Hamilton Police Service. Amnesties held in 2006, 2014 and 2015 saw 1,726 firearms turned over to police as well as thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Hamilton Police worked closely together with Hamilton By-law and McMaster Security to ensure Saint Patrick’s Day festivities in the McMaster student housing area of Westdale was kept under control. Regardless ofthe sunny temperatures on March 17, 2018, police were happy to see the majority of students adhering respectfully to the provincial drinking laws and city noise by-laws.

Hamilton Police took a pro-active approach and deployed the Mounted Unit, Public Order Unit and Action Team to the streets on Saturday which prevented house parties and alcohol type behaviours from escalating.

Members of the Hamilton Police Service, Division three Patrol, traded their work boots for hockey skates when they hit the ice with neighbourhood youth last week. Police responded to Moorland Park, Ancaster, to play a game of outdoor pond hockey with some kids from the neighbourhood.

Constable Jeff Ferguson of Division three, C Squad had the idea in 2016 after seeing a group of youth playing hockey on the outdoor rink. He was speaking with the youth when they challenged him to play. Constable Ferguson declined as he was working but promised he would return with a team of his colleagues, and some hot chocolate, at a later date. This is how the idea for ‘Pond Pals’ was born.

The 2018 edition of Pond Pals took place this past Tuesday at Moorland Park and saw almost a dozen participants interacting with Hamilton police officers while playing pond hockey.

The event was supported by Pro Action Cops & Kids, a charity with the goal of breaking down barriers between youth and police in the community.
