On Thursday, September 3, 2020, shortly before 7:00 p.m., Hamilton Police received information about a male who had entered the water at Van Wagners Beach and had not resurfaced. Hamilton Police and other emergency service partners quickly responded as efforts were initiated to locate the male. He was later recovered 30 meters offshore at which time life-saving measures were administered. The male was then transported to the hospital.

Early Friday morning, the 21-year-old Hamilton man succumbed to his injuries.

Hamilton Police would like to thank everyone who assisted with rescue efforts.

At this time, police will not be releasing the identity of the deceased.

A bond between two friends became a little stronger last night when a 10-year-old saved his friend from the icy waters of Lake Ontario. The Hamilton Police ACTION team was in the area at the time and helped pull the child to safety.

On December 19, 2019, shortly before 6:30 p.m., two boys ventured out to the docks on the east side of the Hamilton Bay Sailing Club when one of the boys slipped and fell into the water. By a stroke of luck, the Hamilton Police ACTION team was patrolling the area and noticed a person in the water.

When police located the boys, the one child was almost fully submerged with his friend holding onto him. Police acted quickly and pulled the child out of the water.

EMS attended and the boys were cleared from needing further medical treatment.

When water begins to freeze on rivers, lakes and other open bodies of water, it may look solid but it is often still dangerous. Hamilton Police would like to remind the public about staying safe before venturing onto icy surfaces.

ICE SAFETY TIPS:

• Although ice has begun to form on many local bodies of water, it's too early in the season to consider recreational ice activities.

• The ice in most locations is too thin to safely support the weight of a person. Fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions make the ice unpredictable.

• At this point, we strongly advise that everyone stay off any frozen bodies of water in our area. Keep children close and pets on a leash, remaining on marked pathways/trails.

• Ice should be a minimum of 4" thick before walking or skating on it. This guideline applies to clear hard ice only. Do not go out onto grey ice as this indicates the presence of water.

• If someone falls through thin ice, do not rush in after them. Call 911 immediately. You can try to reach for them with long objects like poles, branches, rope, or a hose.

On Monday, July 15, 2019, shortly before 9:00 p.m., Hamilton Police received information about a male who was found at the bottom of a pool at a residence on Proctor Boulevard, Hamilton. The male had been swimming alone in the backyard pool as the homeowner was out front. When the owner returned to the rear yard he noticed the male at the bottom of the pool. He entered the pool, retrieved the male and with the assistance of a neighbour commenced CPR and called 9-1-1. Upon arrival, police continued CPR until Hamilton Paramedics relieved them.

The male was transported to the hospital and later pronounced deceased.

An autopsy procedure is scheduled for later today.

Efforts continue by Hamilton Police Detectives to notify the next-of-kin for the deceased male.

On Sunday, July 15, 2018, the body of Ray Emery was located in the Hamilton Harbor near the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. On Monday, July 16, 2018, an autopsy was performed and the results confirmed Ray Emery's cause of death was drowning.

The Hamilton Police are concluding their investigation as non-criminal. Any further inquiries shall be directed to the Office of the Chief Corner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service Media contact person: Cheryl Mahyr 1-647-329-1898.

On July 15, 2018, shortly after 6:00 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to reports of a possible drowning near Leander Boat Club. With the assistance of the Niagara Regional Police dive unit, the swimmer was recovered at 2:50 p.m. near the location where he was last seen. Emery's family has been notified and his cause of death will be confirmed pending a post-mortem.
