Hamilton Man Arrested on Firearms Charges

Hamilton Police arrested a 27 year-old man for firearm-related charges over the weekend.

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, Hamilton Police responded to reports of a male inside a dwelling on Somerset Avenue in possession of a firearm.

After a short interaction with police, the male exited the dwelling. A loaded firearm was recovered in the suspect’s vehicle.

The male is facing the following charges:

· Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

· Possession of a Prohibited Loaded Firearm

· Unsafe Storage

Hamilton Police continue to put pressure on those individuals and organizations dealing drugs in our community.

A Hamilton Police Major Drugs and Gangs Unit investigation led to the seizure of a large amount of cocaine, MDMA, oxycodone, illicit cannabis, psilocybin, as well as a large amount of cash and numerous firearms.

“We are committed to tackling gun violence and drug trafficking in our City. These issues threaten the safety of our neighbourhoods and the well-being of our residents. Our members are dedicated to getting these criminals off the streets and continuing to make Hamilton a safe place for everyone,” said Chief Frank Bergen.

On August 22, 2024, warrants were executed at an Ancaster residence, rural Burlington property and a motor vehicle. As a result, Police seized the following illicit drugs:

• Over one kilogram of cocaine
• Approximately seven kilograms of MDMA
• 33 kilograms of processed cannabis
• Over 250 grams of psilocybin
• Over 2,500 oxycodone pills

The street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be $632,685.

Police also seized the following:

• A large amount of cash, estimated to be between $200.000 - $250,000
• A 9 mm Prohibited handgun
• A .45 caliber handgun
• Ammunition
• A conducted energy weapon

Further, Police seized another restricted firearm and four non-restricted firearms to be held for a firearms prohibition hearing.

As a result of the investigation Nikolas Deschenes, a 34-year-old Ancaster man, was arrested and faces the following criminal charges:

• Possession of Prohibited Firearm
• Possession Contrary to Order
• Possession Contrary to Order
• CDSA 5(2) – Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
• CDSA 5(2) – Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking - MDMA

• Cannabis Act 9(2) – Possession of Cannabis for the Purpose of Distributing

A 31-year-old Burlington male is being sought by police and will be charged with the following:

• Careless Storage of a Firearm
• Possession of Prohibited Weapon
• CDSA 5(2) – Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking – Psilocybin

Hamilton Police continue to investigate into the shooting incident in Hamilton’s east end.

On Monday, December 4, 2023, shortly after 11:00 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to a shots fired call after receiving reports that a firearm and muzzle flash were witnessed in the area of Gage Avenue South and Lawrence Road.

Acting on a provided suspect description, police successfully identified and apprehended a 58-year-old man, Gianni Paul Deluca, in close proximity to the incident site. Subsequent to the arrest, a search was conducted, revealing the following items in the possession of Deluca;

• Small revolver style firearm
• Pepper spray
• 72.2 grams of fentanyl
• 12.5 grams of cocaine

Gianni Paul Deluca has been charged with the following;

• Proceeds of Crime under $5000
• Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
• Prohibited Firearm- Loaded/Unloaded

During the investigation of the crime scene, police discovered a blood trail that guided them to a residence, resulting in the arrest of a 37-year-old male, Daniel Hanson and a 25-year-old male, Hayden Scott Ermel.

Daniel Hanson has been charged with the following;

• Fail to Comply Probation
• Obstruct Peace Officer
• Robbery with Violence
• Administering Noxious thing with intent to Aggrieve or Annoy

Hayden Scott Ermel has been charged with the following;

• Robbery with Violence
• Administering Noxious Thing with intent to Aggrieve or Annoy
• Two Counts of Fail to Comply Probation

 Hayden Scott Ermel sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand and was transported to hospital for treatment.

At this time, it is believed that the Ermel and Hanson attempted to rob Deluca. This led to a confrontation, ultimately resulting in the discharge of a firearm. 

On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, police executed a search warrant at the residence and located two BB guns.

Hamilton Police have seized $100K in illicit drugs after executing a residential search warrant on the Hamilton Mountain Friday.

On Friday, July 7, 2023, as a result of an on-going investigation, Hamilton Police executed a search warrant and located a large amount of cocaine and methamphetamine, three shotguns, three rifles, over 580 rounds of ammunition and a large quantity of Canadian currency.

On Friday, March 31, 2023, shortly after 8:30 a.m., a citizen was driving in the area of Barton Street and 50 Road in Stoney Creek when they observed a bedside table discarded on the roadside. They stopped to retrieve it, only to locate a loaded handgun attached to the table’s underside. The citizen called police. Further investigation led to the seizure of seven additional guns with ammunition. A 59-year-old man from Hamilton has been charged for firearm-related charges.

Since the beginning of the year, police have seized 48 total crime guns from a variety of incidents, five of which were recovered during traffic-related stops. This is up 77 per cent from this time last year.

“We should all be alarmed by these numbers. Thanks to the great work of our officers and the keen eyes of a few citizens, we got 13 guns within a 48-hour period,” said Chief Frank Bergen.

Additional incidents are outlined below:

• On Saturday, April 1, 2023, shortly before 10:00 a.m., police were called to the area of Candlewood Drive for a firearm-related incident. Two guns were seized during the investigation, involving youth from 16-22 years old.
• On Sunday, April 2, 2023, shortly after 2:30 a.m. police were called to the area of Main Street West and Queen Street South for a loaded hand gun found in a bar. Police attended the address and confirmed that it was a loaded firearm, deemed it safe and seized the gun.
• On Sunday, April 2, 2023, shortly after 1:00 p.m. police located a stopped vehicle in a live lane of traffic and a male slumped over the wheel and ammunition on the passenger seat of the vehicle. Two loaded long arm guns were recovered in the investigation.

“If not for the interaction of police and concerned citizens, these guns would still be circulating on Hamilton’s streets. These incidents are a reminder that if you see something, then say something. By working together, we can make our streets safer for everyone,” said Bergen.

On Friday, February 17, 2023, at approximately 1:00p.m., armed masked suspects entered a residence in the area of Winona Road and North Service Road in the City of Hamilton. The suspects fled the area in a black Dodge Ram.  The suspects are described as follows:

Suspect 1 – Male, dark complexion, approximately 6'2 - skinny build, grey tracksuit, black ski mask, carrying a black handgun.

Suspect 2 – Male, dark complexion, approximately 6-6'2 skinny build, all black clothing, black ski mask, carrying a black handgun

Suspect 3 – Male, dark complexion, approximately 5'10-5'11 well built, blue jeans, black sweater, black ski mask.

A fourth suspect was heard in the residence but no description was obtained. It is believed a fifth suspect was waiting in the vehicle.

On October 13, 2022, the warrant was executed. A search of the residence revealed a loaded handgun, 400 grams of cocaine, 10 grams of fentanyl, 150 oxycodone pills, 14 hydromorphone capsules indicative of drug trafficking and $5000 in Canadian currency.

Jose Silva, 38-years-old from Hamilton and April Blake, 53-years-old from Hamilton, were arrested and are facing the following criminal charges.

 Police are also looking for 39-year-old Joelen Keogh in relation to this investigation.

Hamilton Police take another firearm off the streets and continue our fight against gun violence.

On Thursday, October 6, 2022, shortly after 7:00 p.m., Hamilton Police conducted a traffic stop after observing a motor vehicle containing three occupants, travelling the wrong direction on Mary Street.

During the traffic stop, it was learned that the driver was failing to comply with release conditions, stemming from another incident. 

The driver was placed under arrested and occupants asked to exit the vehicle.

While interacting with one of the occupants, police observed a handgun in the pant pocket of the occupant and they were arrested.

On Thursday, September 29, 2022, at approximately 11:05 a.m., Hamilton Police conducted a traffic stop in the area of Wentworth Street North and Barton Street East. The investigation revealed that the affixed licence plates were not registered to the vehicle, the male driver was not licenced, and the vehicle was stolen. 

A search of the vehicle revealed two loaded restricted handguns and one loaded restricted handgun which was altered and capable of being used as a fully automatic prohibited firearm. The search also revealed one prohibited over-capacity magazine, a quantity of Cocaine and a quantity of Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms). 

Hamilton Police charged the male driver with four traffic-related offences, as well as the following criminal charges: 

• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm x 3 
• Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized x 3 
• Possession of Prohibited Loaded Firearm x 3 
• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle x 3

In September 2021, Hamilton Police launched Project Suppression in relation to an increase in shootings and gang conflicts in the city. The project, which encompassed multiple units from the across the Service, was designed to target illegal firearms and hold individuals committing offences accountable.

“We continue to see the effect illicit drugs has on all aspects of our society. We know there is the impact on violent crime such as shootings but we also need to be aware of the stark increase in opioid deaths in Hamilton,” said Chief Frank Bergen. 

Over a six month period, Project Suppression resulted in 37 individuals charged, 288 charges laid, the seizure of 28 firearms, 10 replica firearms, 11 prohibited weapons, 5 prohibited devices, over 500 rounds of ammunition, a hand grenade, $273,000 in cash and a significant amount of drugs.

The estimated street value of the seized drugs is $2,500,000. The project additionally resulted in the significant seizure of high purity Fentanyl that once prepared for street doses would have an estimated street value of $30,000,000.

“We continue to see an increase in guns on our streets. In fact, this week alone two traffic stops yielded two loaded handguns," said Deputy Chief Ryan Diodati.

The drugs seized in these investigations have an estimated street-value of more than $31.5 million dollars.

In September 2019, the Hamilton Police Service and the RCMP formed Project Skyfall in order to address drug trafficking and firearm-related crime in the Golden Horseshoe. With the assistance of Halton Regional Police Service, the fully-integrated team was mandated to uncover, investigate, and disrupt serious and organized crime elements in our community.

Over the two-year investigation, there were approximately 150 warrants and other court orders filed. In total, police seized 29 kilograms of cocaine, three kilograms of methamphetamine, 400 grams of fentanyl, and 440 pounds of illegal cannabis, which represented a combined street value of $5,518,000.  Investigators also seized 13 handguns, one long gun, other prohibited firearm components and weapons, as well as $765,602 in Canadian currency.

“We know drugs have a significant impact on Hamilton’s streets and are associated with an increase in violence and the rise in opioid deaths. Project Skyfall targeted a highly sophisticated drug trafficking syndicate involving organized crime groups in Hamilton. By working collaboratively with our neighbouring law enforcement partners, we were able to take a significant amount of drugs and firearms off our streets,” says Hamilton Police Service Inspector Mark Stiller.

 “The RCMP recognizes the importance of partnerships to address serious and organized crime in our community,” said Superintendent Jeff Cooper, Officer in Charge of District Command. “This investigation, conducted jointly with the Hamilton Police Service and the Halton Regional Police Service, serves as a great example of how a coordinated enforcement effort can contribute to safer communities and disrupt illegal activity, keeping illicit drugs and weapons off the streets.”

Project Skyfall was supported through funding provided by the Government of Ontario, Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario.

“Organized crime groups exploit profit opportunities wherever they arise. They do not care what city or town their criminal activities take them to. Those involved in these groups are only concerned about making money,” said Halton Regional Police Service Inspector Dave Costantini. “They do not care about the safety, security or well-being of any member of any community.  Project Skyfall demonstrates the success that can be achieved when police services collaborate to tenaciously disrupt and dismantle these criminal organizations.

Concluding in January 2022, 17 individuals were charged through Project Skyfall and 145 criminal charges were laid. The following individuals face charges:

Police investigation results in the seizure of a loaded handgun, ammunition, drugs and cash.

On Thursday, January 13, 2022, the Hamilton Police Gangs and Weapons Enforcement Unit, with the assistance of the Emergency Response Unit, executed a search warrant at a residence on the Stoney Creek Mountain.

A Hamilton man was arrested and charged with several firearms and drug related offences.

As a result of the search warrant, police located and seized:

• Loaded Browning .22cal handgun
• 11 rounds of ammunition in the magazine
• In excess of $10,000 in cash
• 82 baggies containing small quantities of fentanyl
• Baggies containing small quantities of cocaine

Harmer was brought to Central custody, where he has been held for bail.

Over the course of Project Munro, 24 search warrants were executed and 16 people charged with 213 offences.

Hamilton Police continue to relentlessly pursue offenders who are engaged in violence, drug activity and firearms in our community. Nearly 35 per cent of the firearms seized were found either loaded or unsafely stored. Several firearms had also been modified in order to enhance performance. Three heavily plated high-calibre bullet proof vests were also seized.

As a result of the investigation, police seized:

• 35 firearms
• Four prohibited devices (extended magazines)
• 75 Kg of processed Cannabis (Approximate value of one million dollars)
• 2500 Cannabis plants (Approximate value of two million dollars)
• Thousands of rounds of ammunition
• $175,000 in currency (approximately)
• $20,000 worth in illicit drugs
• Multiple kilograms of suspected cutting agent

The drugs seized in this investigation have an estimated street-value of more than $3 million dollars.

Even though cannabis and related products are now legal, illicit grow operations remain a valid concern as they pose safety risks to the community. For example, modifications like tampering with electrical wiring, installing irrigation devices, industrial exhaust fans, and bypassing utility meters can result in fires or explosions.

Over the past year, police in Ontario have seized tens of millions of dollars’ worth of plants and products from large-scale illicit cannabis grow ops and production sites across the province. These investigations enforce cannabis laws and investigate organized crime who exploit the current legal medical cannabis regulations for their own criminal purpose. Hamilton Police continue to take guns off Hamilton streets.

This week Hamilton Police seized three firearms, all from separate incidents.

On Wednesday, September 22, 2021, shortly after 6:00 a.m., police were made aware of a possible impaired driver in the area of Gage Park. Officers located the vehicle and conducted their investigation, which subsequently lead to locating a loaded .40 calibre hand gun, 240g of Cocaine, 10.5g Fentanyl and 110 Oxycontin pills.

Osman had his bail opposed.

On Thursday, September 23, 2021, Hamilton Police Gangs and Weapons Enforcement Unit executed a warrant on a residence on Dundas Street. From the warrant, police seized a 9mm semi-auto handgun with a high capacity magazine capable of holding 30 rounds, over 500 grams of processed marijuana, over $12,000 cash and paraphernalia to support trafficking.

Lampman was held for a bail hearing and Mah was released by way of Undertaking with conditions.

On Friday, September 24, 2021, members of Division 3 H.E.A.T executed a search warrant at a downtown apartment and arrested two individuals. A search of the residence located a loaded 9mm firearm.

Both Sakr and Moss had their bail opposed.

Hamilton Police seize two guns and drugs, after executing a search warrant at a mountain residence.

On Tuesday, September 7, 2021, members of the Hamilton Police Service Division 3 H.E.A.T. Unit executed a search warrant at a residence on the Hamilton Mountain.

Subsequent to the arrest of two Hamilton males and execution of a search warrant, officers seized a loaded .45 Caliber Norinco handgun, unloaded short barreled silver handgun .9mm, 48.09 grams of Cocaine and 2.57 grams of Methamphetamine.

The two arrested males had their bail opposed and will be in court today.

On August 8, 2020, police received information that two firearms connected to the accused, Shane Murray, were located at 910 Barton St. E. Apt #3. A search warrant was sought and obtained for the residence.

Police were called to a Mohawk Road West residence to investigate a domestic incident where a dog was kicked and property damaged. The investigation led Police to a downtown apartment where a shotgun and other items were located inside. Several criminal charges have been laid.

On Monday, August 3, 2020, shortly after 5:30 a.m., an argument between a male and female occurred inside her Mohawk Road West residence. When asked to leave, the male became agitated and kicked her dog in the face and damaged a screen window.

Police received further information that the male had a shotgun at his apartment on Charlton Ave W. A search warrant was obtained and contact was made with the male who inside his apartment. Police negotiated with the male who surrendered himself to without incident.

Hamilton Police safely arrest a 30-year-old male after he threatened to shoot a female.

On August 4, 2020, shortly after 9:00 a.m. police responded to the Husky Gas Station on Limeridge Road East in Hamilton to a male and female arguing inside. Police arrived and located a visibly upset female indicating concern for her wellbeing after violent threats were made by her boyfriend.

The female told police she ran from her Limeridge Road residence seeking a place of safety at the nearest public location when he threatened to shoot her. The male followed her to the gas bar with a long gun shoved down the front of his pants.

Police attended back to the residence and located the male exiting the front door. The male did not comply with Police directions and after a physical interaction, Police deployed a conductive energy weapon (CEW) to bring the male under control.

The male was safely placed under arrest. Police located ammunition his pocket and a loaded 12 gauge shotgun inside the residence.

The male was arrested and brought down to central custody with his bail opposed.

The Division 30 Criminal Investigations Bureau is investigating a robbery incident that occurred on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at approximately 7:30 p.m., in the area of Limeridge Road West and Bonaventure Drive, Hamilton.

The driver was alone in his parked vehicle when he was confronted by two male suspects with firearms. The suspects demanded the driver surrender personal items in his possession including his motor vehicle. The driver was not injured and the vehicle, a black 2009 Mercedes C300 with licence plate CCLR 590, was stolen and remains outstanding.

The two suspects involved in this incident are to be considered armed and dangerous. If members of the public see the vehicle or suspects, do not approach, contact 9-1-1 immediately.

At this time police believe this was a targeted incident.

Shortly after 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019, Hamilton Police Service executed a search warrant at an east end residence in relation to illegal drug activity. During the search, Hamilton Police seized a large quantity of Cocaine with a street value of $45,000, two replica firearms, ammunition, an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency and drug paraphernalia.

A 34-year-old Hamilton man has been arrested and will appear in court on Friday, March 22, 2019, to answer to drug and firearm-related charges.

On Monday, February 25, 2019, at 1:10 a.m., Hamilton Police were dispatched to Grant Avenue for a car accident where the occupants failed to remain on the scene. A witness reported seeing a vehicle collide with a taxi and the four male occupants fleeing the area.

Police arrived to find a black 2012 Acura parked in a private driveway and a loaded black firearm in plain view. Shortly after, Hamilton Police located four males walking northbound on Tisdale Street and entering a vehicle with an Uber logo on Cannon Street. When police initiated a traffic stop, the four occupants fled in various directions.

The Emergency Response Unit and K9 attended but the suspects were not located.

The suspects are described as follows:

• Black male, long black hair with one dreadlock/braid, wearing all black jeans and jacket, with a goatee, 5’3-5’4

• Black male, scruff on face, carrying a backpack, 5’8-5’9

• Black/brown male, fair complexion, braids, goatee, light blue jacket and jeans

• Black male, cream coloured jacket, blue jeans, backpack

Hamilton Police recovered three firearms and ammunition from the vehicles. The Make Safe Task Force continues to investigate.

Witnesses heard a loud bang which sounded like a gunshot and watched a group of 5-6 youths in their late teens or early twenties scatter from the area into multiple directions. A victim has not been located and police are looking for anybody that may have been involved.

On June 13, 2018, just shortly before 9:00 am, Hamilton Police BEAR Unit and East End HEAT units were in the area of Main Street and Arrowhead Lane in Grimsby, Ontario investigating stolen property and drug activity related to Project Daybreak.

As a result of our investigation Gabe Sciarra was arrested leaving his residence, he was found in possession of a quantity of methamphetamine, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia related to the sale of drugs.

Police then executed a search warrant on his residence and located a quantity of drugs including crystal meth, cocaine and magic mushroom. In addition police seized 10 firearms and a large quantity of stolen property including a steel palm tree that had been reported to the media.

Hamilton Police seize a flare gun and air soft pistol after investigating incidents at a east area residence and central mountain restaurant. Police often encounter items such as these which closely resemble the real version and until examined are considered being such. Depending on circumstances, including the appearance of the potential weapon and the way it is used, police may lay criminal charges.

April 21, 2018

On Tuesday April 24, 2018 shortly after 10:00a.m., Hamilton Police received information about a disturbance occurring at a residence in the area of Barton Street East and Cavell Avenue, Hamilton. Upon arrival, police observed a male demanding entry into the residence. Defying police instruction, the male ran off discarding a weapon. After a short pursuit the male was apprehended along with the weapon. Further investigation revealed the male was in possession of two grams of marijuana

The weapon has been identified as a black painted flare gun. It has been seized for further investigation.

A 21 year old Hamilton man is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday April 25, 2018.

April 25, 2018

On Wednesday April 25, 2018, shortly after midnight, Hamilton Police received information about a male at a restaurant in the area of Upper Ottawa Street and Stone Church Road East, who was in possession of a weapon. Police attended the restaurant, identified the male and safely arrested him in a motor vehicle, in the parking lot. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a firearm which was proven to a black air soft pistol with a light attached to the barrel. Further investigation revealed the male was in possession of 7.5 grams of marijuana.

The 21-year-old Hamilton man was released on an Appearance Notice with a future court date.

On April 20, 2018, Hamilton Police received information that a male was seen carrying two firearms in the area. The individual was then reported entering into a residence on Victoria Avenue. As a precaution, police closed down Victoria Avenue from Main to Stinson, as well as the Claremont Access. St. Patrick’s Catholic Elementary School and Ontario Works were also placed into Hold and Secure.

After a search of the area, two persons of interest were detained. There were no firearms in the residence and police continue to investigate.

On Monday, March 5, 2018, shortly after 1:30 p.m., Hamilton police observed a black 2009 Dodge Caravan travelling eastbound on Barton Street East at East Avenue North. The vehicle was stopped as a result of the rear licence plate being obstructed.

When police approached, they detected a strong odour of Marijuana from the cabin of the vehicle. The driver began acting nervous as he attempted to hide something underneath the seat. He was arrested and the vehicle searched.

Investigation revealed the driver was possession of a loaded shotgun, a rifle, a 9mm pistol, a large quantity of cash and marijuana.

On Monday, February 26, 2018, shortly after 12:30 a.m., police observed a known suspended driver operating a 2006 Ford Escape on Burlington Street East at the entrance to the Nicola Tesla Boulevard. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was placed under arrest for Driving While Under Suspension. Investigation revealed the driver was in possession of a firearm and shortly afterwards police located a CEW (Tazer) in the possession of the passenger.
