On Saturday, October 25, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a 20-year-old woman was walking in the area of Golf Links Road and Neville Drive when she was approached by a vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle began to utter anti-black slurs towards the victim and proceeded to assault her.

The vehicle and occupants are unknown to the victim, and this incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

The vehicle is described as:

• Sedan

• Silver or bronze in colour

One of the suspects is described as:

• Male, light-skinned

• Curly black or brown hair

• Wearing a grey or white sweater

Investigators are asking residents and business owners in the area to review their security footage from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025, for any suspicious activity.

Hamilton Police recorded 297 hate/bias incidents and criminal offences in 2024—a 35 per cent increase from the previous year. While this rise is concerning, it may reflect growing community trust in reporting and strengthened officer training in identifying hate-motivated occurrences.

The majority of occurrences were racially motivated, followed by incidents involving religion and sexual orientation. The Black, Jewish, and 2S&LGBTQIA+ communities were most frequently impacted.

“Hate crimes impact more than just individuals—they affect the sense of safety and belonging for entire communities,” said Chief Frank Bergen. “It’s our shared responsibility to confront hate and support one another.”

Potential contributing factors to the rise:

• Community engagement and education encouraging more individuals to report
• Enhanced officer training and awareness
• The influence of global events on local communities

Despite the increase in reports, hate crimes remain underreported. Hamilton Police continue to encourage all individuals to report hate/bias occurrences, no matter how minor they may seem.

In June 2024, Hamilton Police launched the Hate Crime Case Review Team (HCCRT)—a collaborative, community-driven initiative to improve accountability and transparency in hate crime investigations.

The HCCRT is composed of 14 community representatives from 2S&LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, Jewish, Muslim, and South Asian communities. Members were selected through an open application and community voting process, ensuring diverse and intersectional representation.

Between September and December 2024, HCCRT members received training in:

• Anti-Racism & Anti-Oppression
• Secondary/vicarious trauma awareness
• Crown-led briefings on hate crimes
• Police systems and investigative processes

Beginning in January 2025, the team began reviewing a randomized sample of 124 hate-related cases (2018–2021)—a statistically significant 95 per cent confidence sample. Their insights will help shape service delivery, identify gaps, and strengthen Hamilton Police’s response to hate-motivated occurrences.

Since 2019, Hamilton Police have implemented proactive strategies to prevent and respond to hate crimes, including:

• Community presentations to raise awareness about reporting
• Enhanced support for victims—162 interactions by HPS Victim Services in 2024
• Mandatory hate crime training for all new recruits
• A  hate crime dashboard for real-time tracking
• Expanded online reporting tools
• Focus groups and a community-led Town Hall to build and formalize the HCCRT
• Hosting Hate Crime Symposiums to share statistics, reporting tools, and community-focused initiatives

On June 14, 2024, at approximately 12:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to the mosque for a trespasser that had entered the building. The male entered through an insecure door and made his way to a classroom with a teacher and students. He then proceeded to make hate-related comments. Upon leaving the building, the male ripped up an English copy of the Quran that he brought with him.

Based on the available information at the time, the individual was removed from the property. Upon further investigation, video evidence and witness statements provided police with reasonable grounds to arrest and charge 54-year-old Wayne Voorthuyzen from Hamilton with criminal harassment.

This incident has been classified as a hate crime based on Voorthuyzen’s statements and actions.

Hamilton Police Service stands with and supports the Muslim community in denouncing Islamophobia. Incidents of this nature create fear and question the sense of belonging for diverse communities. We appreciate the impact this incident had on the community, especially those directly involved in the incident.

Hamilton Police increased presence at the mosque over the weekend and have been working collaboratively with the mosque’s administration to assure the community of their safety.

“The growing trend of anti-Jewish hate occurrences is worrying. There is a deep impact on the Jewish community that takes an emotional and physical toll. As a collective community, we must do more to stand against hate in any form,” said Gustavo Rymberg, CEO Hamilton Jewish Federation.

“While this rise in occurrences and crimes is concerning, it is encouraging that these incidents are being reported and captured. This data shows us the extent of how communities are impacted and certainly, for those communities like the Black community, we know many hate occurrences go unreported,” said Comfort Afari, Hamilton Black Health Community Leaders Forum.

Hamilton Police continue to encourage communities to report all hate/bias incidents to ensure police can respond.

Since 2019, Hamilton Police have implemented a number of proactive and strategic steps to prevent hate-related occurrences, encourage reporting and provide support to victims. These include:

• Incorporating the Hate Crime Unit with the EDI and Community Engagement Units to create a wrap-around response for hate crime occurrences and support to victims

On Sunday, April 2, 2023, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a 50-year-old man was walking along Sterling Avenue when he was approached by unknown male suspect near Cline Avenue North.  The suspect uttered racial slurs towards the victim and proceeded to assault the victim.

The male suspect and the male victim were not known to one another.

This occurrence is being investigated as a hate crime.

The suspect is described as:

• 35-40 years-of-age
• 6'2
• 250 pounds
• Short average looking hair
• Wearing a blue/green thin winter jacket

The suspect was last seen running through Cline Avenue North then Paisley Avenue then Dromore Crescent.

On Sunday, March 19, 2023, police received a report of hate bias graffiti to the school at 80 Colcrest Street in Stoney Creek.

The anti-semitic/homophobic graffiti was observed on the outer area of the school.

The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

On Friday, February 24, 2023, shortly after 8:00 a.m., a 47-year-old female was walking west on the south sidewalk on King Street West, when a male travelling in the opposite direction slapped the female as they walked past one another.

The male suspect and female victim were unknown to another.

The victim contacted police and provided a suspect description. Shortly thereafter, police located and arrested the suspect. During the execution of the arrest, the accused uttered racial slurs directed at the victim to the officers.

A 44-year-old man of Hamilton has been charged with Assault Level One. This incident is being reviewed by the Hamilton Police Hate Crime Unit.

On Saturday February 11th, 2023, at approximately 8:00am in the area of Main Street and Wentworth Street in the City of Hamilton Police attended a business in response to a male armed with a knife and threatening a customer.  The suspect fled as police arrived but was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

On September 6, 2022, at approximately 12:40 a.m ., the suspect broke into a residence in the area of Haddon Avenue South and Main Street West in Hamilton targeting members of the Jewish Community. 

The occurrence has been reviewed by the Hate Crime Unit and is being investigated as a hate crime. On Tuesday, August 2, 2022, Hamilton Police became aware of a hate incident posted on social media.

The incident is believed to have taken place on Monday, August 1, 2022, on an HSR bus, in the area of Gage Park at the Lawrence Road entrance. The content of the video shows a male making transphobic and homophobic slurs towards two people. The male also made threats towards the individuals and exited the bus at Gage Park on Lawrence Road.

After further investigation, Hamilton Police arrested 41-year-old Christopher Pretula from Hamilton. Pretula has been charged with Assault and Utter Threat.

The incident has been reviewed by the Hate Crime Unit and an application will be made to classify the incident as a Hate Crime offence because of the perception the victims belong to an identified group. A hate crime is a criminal offence committed against a person or property which is motivated by hate/bias or prejudice based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or any other similar factor.

The incident was reported to police via the Hamilton Police online reporting tool by a third party in another province as well as a local media outlet.

On Thursday, August 16, 2021, shortly after 10:30p.m., an unknown youth male walked up the driveway of a Waterdown residence and removed a 2S&LGBTQIA+ pride flag, which was hanging over the garage. The youth male then threw the flag on the ground and proceeded to stomp on it, eventually leaving the area with the flag.

The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

As the charges are before the courts no additional information will be released.

After the senseless killing of a Muslim family in London, Ontario, a 26-year-old Hamilton man intentionally targeted and promoted hatred against members of the Muslim community through social media. Hamilton Police were notified about the social media posts made by the accused and an investigation was initiated.

On August 17, 2021, Hamilton Police arrested 26-year-old Matthew Field for Wilful Promotion of Hatred.

The charge of Wilful Promotion of Hatred requires prior consent from the Attorney General to be laid. After investigating the incident, the Hamilton Police Hate Crime Unit applied to lay the charge and consent was granted by the Deputy Attorney General of Ontario

Field will appear in court on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

On Monday, July 12, 2021, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a mother and daughter were walking through a parking lot in a plaza in the Ancaster Meadowlands. An interaction occurred after a vehicle pulling out of a parking spot almost struck one of the victims.

The interaction escalated with the suspect uttering threats towards the victims while using slurs targeting the Muslim community.

The victims ran across the street and hid behind some bushes, while the suspect searched for them. He eventually located them and threatened to kill them. One of the victims ran screaming for help and witnesses intervened as the suspect fled the area.

The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

In 2020, there were a total of 80 hate/bias incidents reported to Hamilton Police. This number represents both suspected hate/bias incidents and criminal offences. Over the past eight years, the average number of reported hate crimes is approximately 121.2 per year.

“We have listened to the community that increasing transparency and opportunities for community engagement is required in rebuilding trust,” said Chief Frank Bergen. “Working alongside the community to identify wraparound approaches will be integral to creating informed solutions.”

Hamilton Police will be reaching out to community organizations to form the Hate Crime Case Review Team. The goal will be to work collaboratively to develop comprehensive recommendations to improve outcomes for hate crime victims. Similar to the SACRT, the scope of the review will include an internal and external analysis of hate crime investigations, as well as looking at policies, procedures, and training. Organizational representatives on the Hate Crime Case Review Team would also have a background in anti-racism, anti-oppression practices.

In an effort to enhance support for victims, the Hate Crime Detective and Victim Services will also initiate contact with a victim following a hate crime report. Victim Services Branch staff will provide emotional support, assist in safety planning, provide community referrals, and guide victims on accessing financial support in some cases. For those unsure about reporting, Victim Services Branch can help victims navigate the reporting process but can provide support regardless if an individual wishes to report.

An adult male was walking in the area of King Street East and Holton Avenue, Hamilton when he was sexually assaulted by an unknown male suspect.

The investigation has led detectives to identify this incident as a hate crime. Investigators are working closely with the 2S and LGBTQIA+ Liaison Officer and the Hate Crime Unit.

On Sunday, November 29, 2020, shortly after 9:30 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to the area of Barton Street East and Kenilworth Avenue North, for reports of a person with a weapon. Once on scene, officers located the victim, a male in his late 20’s. He advised that he was inside a local business when a male verbally accosted him. The male made several derogatory statements to the victim referencing sexual orientation. The situation escalated resulting in the male chasing the victim outside of the business with a knife while threatening his life.

As officers interviewed the victim, the suspect was located and arrested without incident. During the search of the suspect police discovered he was in possession of brass knuckles, an undisclosed amount of Fentanyl, pieces of identification that were not in his name and the knife believed to have been used in the incident.

The suspect was taken into police custody and his matter was addressed at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Monday, November 30, 2020, where he faced several criminal charges.

The victim was not physically harmed.

On Wednesday, October 9, 2019, two males, both 19-years-of-age were arrested and interviewed. Their roles in the incident were established and they were subsequently released unconditionally.

On Saturday, October 5, 2019, shortly after 9:00 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to the Beth Jacob Synagogue located at 375 Aberdeen Avenue for anti–Semitic messaging on the property. Through investigation, police believe the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Friday night.

Hamilton Police Detectives and the Hate Crime Unit continue to investigate the incident and members of the public are asked to review their security cameras for any suspicious activity.

An increased police presence is expected in the area.
