Hamilton Police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying a suspect in a residential Break and Enter investigation.

A lone suspect broke into a residence in the area of Mud Street West and Paramount Drive area.

The suspect is described as follows:

• Male, white, thin athletic build
• Wearing a hooded windbreaker/raincoat with reflective tape, long pants, reebok running shoes, gloves, medical mask

Investigators are appealing for the public's assistance in identifying the suspect. Hamilton Police have arrested a 50-year-old man in relation to a residential arson investigation.

On Monday, February 13, 2023, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Hamilton Police and emergency partners responded to a multi-unit residential fire at 48 Sanford Avenue South in Hamilton. 

During evacuation, the residents were unable to exit the front door and had to jump out a second story window.  The family including a young child suffered injuries as a result.    

Hamilton Police have arrested, Edward Christopher James Ypma, a 50-year-old man of Hamilton, who is facing the following charges;

• Arson- Disregard for Human Life
• Possession of Incendiary Material
• Two counts of Fail to Comply Probation
• Fail to Comply with Release Order

Hamilton Police continue to investigate numerous reports of residential entries in Ancaster over the last two months.

The public can expect an increased police presence in the Ancaster area as Hamilton Police continue efforts to identify the suspect(s) responsible for the reported residential entries.

The nature of the reported residential entries can be characterized as “opportunistic”, in which entry was gained through an unlocked door, an open garage, or by using a garage door opener that was taken from an unlocked vehicle parked outside the residence.

Police want to take this opportunity to remind community members to stay vigilant and encourage the public to look out for one another. We ask that you report all suspicious activity and crimes to police so they can be investigated and tracked.

Remember, “If you see something, say something”. 

Hamilton Police values this important information as we look into these crimes and deploy resources accordingly to better serve our community. It is important to recognize that criminals find it difficult to operate in neighbourhoods where citizens take an active role in preventing crime.
