On Tuesday December 17, 2024 around 8:20 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to the area of Cootes Drive and Main Street West in the City of Hamilton for a motor vehicle collision.

Two pedestrians were crossing at the crosswalk on Cootes Drive when an SUV, which was travelling northbound, struck them. The vehicle did not stop and continued northbound without remaining at the scene.

Witnesses described the SUV as an older-model, blue vehicle - possibly a Dodge Durango.

The pedestrians were transported to hospital after sustaining serious, but non-life-threatening injuries

Police are currently seeking any witnesses to the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward. Investigators are also asking motorists who were in the area at the time to review their dashcam footage. Additionally, any residents or businesses nearby with surveillance cameras are also asked to check for any relevant recordings.

 The male driver of the E-bike was transported to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.  He remains in critical condition.   

The HPS Collision Reconstruction Unit was called in and has taken carriage of the investigation. The affected stretch of Barton Street East was closed for several hours for the investigation but has since re-opened. 

 At this time, the police are actively seeking any potential witnesses to this incident and urge anyone with information to come forward.  Investigators are also requesting any motorists in the area at the time of the collision to check their dash cameras and any residences or businesses in the area with surveillance cameras to review their camera footage.

Witnesses activated 9-1-1 which paramedics attended and transported the driver, along with two other passengers, both 19-year-old males from Hamilton, to hospital.  It was determined at hospital that all males sustained critical injuries. These injuries included torso trauma and spinal fractures. 

Due to the severity of injuries, the Hamilton Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit was activated and has taken up the investigation.

On Monday, April 25, 2022, shortly after 9 :00 a.m., a 51-year-old Hamilton man was operating a 2021 Peterbuilt transport truck towing a trailer northbound on Dundurn Street South, towards the intersection of King Street West. This intersection is controlled by a traffic light.  The driver began to conduct a left turn to proceed westbound on King Street West.

At the same time, a 31-year-old Hamilton man was operating a 2017 Acura sedan southbound on Dundurn Street North and proceeded into the intersection.  The front of the Acura and the front passenger corner of the Peterbuilt collided and came to rest just west of the intersection. 

The 31-year-old driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to hospital with serious injuries.  A 12-year-old passenger who was in the Acura was taken to hospital with minor injuries.  

The 51-year-old driver was not taken to hospital and has provided a statement to police. 

The Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken carriage of the investigation.  Investigators have not been able to rule out any contributing factors.

Just after 10:00 a.m., Hamilton Police received a 911 call for a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road on the Hamilton Mountain. Dispatchers issued an all car broadcast requesting patrol officers to look out for the vehicle.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., a 78-year-old male was struck on Park Avenue South at Markland Street. He was transported to hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver fled the scene and was arrested on Elmwood Avenue near Garth Street. Three police officers and the accused were taken to hospital for injuries. SIU has now invoked their mandate as a result of the injury incurred during the arrest.

The Hamilton Police Reconstruction Unit is investigating the collision. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Catherine Lockley at 905-546-3833.

Hamilton Police Service has seen a significant increase in the number of complaints to the Aggressive Driver’s Hotline with regards to the proliferation of performance vehicles throughout the city. These complaints include loud exhaust systems, illegal light packages, loud stereo systems and the associated behaviours including street racing, dangerous driving and stunt driving. 

“We hear you, Hamilton,” says Superintendent Marty Schulenberg, “We’ve listened to residents from Stoney Creek to Waterdown that the excessive noise caused by a small number of cars, trucks and motorcycles is having a negative impact in our community.”

From June 18, 2021 to August 31, 2021, 1047 charges were laid, including the following:

• 40 Stunt-related charges
• 40 Vehicles towed
• 371 Muffler Infractions
• 580 Other related offences

“While Project TORQUE is over, we will continue to crack down on poor driving behaviours and vehicles with illegal modifications. We encourage residents to keep reporting to assist us in our efforts to keep our roads safe,” says Schulenberg.

It has been 10 years since the fatal Fail to Remain that struck and killed Hlias Kotsopoulos. Hamilton Police continue to appeal for the public’s assistance.

On Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at approximately 8:20 p.m., Hlias and his wife were crossing Green Road on the south side of Barton Street East in Stoney Creek. At that time they were struck by a motor vehicle that was traveling southbound on Green Road.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital. She later recovered from her injuries. Hlias Kotsopoulos was dragged 100 metres southbound by the vehicle.

Unfortunately, his injuries were fatal and he died at the scene.

The vehicle continued southbound and fled the area.

The suspect vehicle is described as a dark SUV type of vehicle. It has a licence plate consisting of 4 letters followed by 3 numbers. The first letter of the licence plate is the letter “B.”

The vehicle was never located.

Investigators are requesting the public’s assistance in this investigation. Hlias is deeply missed by his wife and family and they deserve answers.

Hamilton Police want the person or persons responsible for killing Hlias to be held accountable.

On Tuesday, September 8, 2020, shortly before 2:00 a.m., a 32-year-old woman from Brampton was driving a black 2016 Mercedes-Benz sedan westbound on the South Service Road towards Centennial Parkway North in the City of Hamilton. The driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to strike a traffic light pole in the centre median. Hamilton Police, Fire and Paramedics were called to the scene and the 5-year-old was transported to the hospital where it was determined that she had suffered a life-threatening injury. She currently remains in stable condition.

The investigation remains ongoing and vehicle speed has not been ruled out. At this time, police do believe impairment was not a contributing factor in this collision.

On Monday, August 3rd, 2020, shortly after 1:00 am., a motorcycle travelling southbound on West 5th lost control just past Brantdale Ave, Hamilton. The rider, a 21-year-old male from Hamilton was operating a 2006 Honda motorcycle. When the rider lost control he mounted the curb and made contact with a pole. The impact caused fatal injuries.

The intersection was closed for several hours as officers processed the scene.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this collision and at this time investigators have ruled out speed and impairment as factors.

On Monday, September 16, 2019, shortly before 8:00 a.m., Hamilton Police proactively set up on Highway 6 near Binkley Court, to observe infractions related to drivers and loading buses. A short time later, a school bus stopped southbound on Highway 6 to pick up a student. With the lights flashing and the front arm extended with the stop sign, a Chevrolet Uplander minivan travelling northbound continued past the bus without stopping. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, a 48-year old male from Hamilton provided the appropriate documents.

On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, shortly after 8:30 a.m., Hamilton Police proactively set up at Rymal Road West and Konstantine Court, to observe infractions related to drivers and loading buses. A short time later, a school bus stopped westbound on Rymal to pick up a student. With the lights flashing and the front arm extended with the stop sign, a Mercedes Benz sedan slowly passed the bus without stopping as a student was embarking. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, a 64-year-old female from Hamilton provided the appropriate documents.

On Thursday, September 26, 2019, shortly after 8:30 a.m., Hamilton Police proactively set up at Rymal Road West and Westlawn Drive, to observe infractions related to drivers and loading buses. A short time later, a school bus stopped on Rymal Road to pick up a student. With the lights flashing and the front arm extended with the stop sign, a Honda Odyssey minivan and a Ford Flex SUV failed to stop as they drove past the bus. Police were able to safely stop both vehicles. The drivers, a 77-year-old male from Hamilton and a 42-year-old female from Hamilton provided the appropriate documents.

All the drivers involved were issued provincial offence tickets for failing to stop for a school bus under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. In accordance with the law, the drivers have fifteen days to respond to the court with their intentions to deal with the matter.

If found guilty of the offence, penalties can include up to a $2000 fine and six demerit points.

Hamilton Police would like to remind drivers of their responsibility to stop for school buses when they have stopped and activated their emergency equipment.

On June 20, 2019, shortly after 2:30 p.m., an officer was conducting a routine traffic stop on Highway 6 in Flamborough. The cruiser was stopped on the west shoulder of the road with all emergency lights activated. While the officer was speaking with the driver a vehicle travelling southbound in the curb lane could be heard accelerating as it approached. The black vehicle sped past the officer, coming within inches of hitting him before leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

The officer disengaged the traffic stop and located the vehicle approximately 3kms away. The black BMW did not comply with the demand to pull over. However, heavy traffic conditions allowed an opportunity for the officer to position his cruiser appropriately to ensure the vehicle knew to stop. The driver disregarded the officer’s demand, placing his vehicle into reverse and leaving on the shoulder of the road. Due to public safety concerns, police did not pursue.

Shortly, after 8:30 p.m., Police attended the Barlake area and placed an 18-year-old male under arrest. He was brought into custody with his bail opposed.

Further investigation revealed the male had a suspended license for unpaid fines.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, shortly before 1:30 a.m., while conducting proactive speed enforcement, police observed a vehicle travelling well above the posted speed limit as it proceeded northbound on Regional Road 56 at Cemetery Road. The posted speed is a 50 km/h zone. An investigation into the speed of the vehicle confirmed it was operating at 102 km/hr. A traffic stop was conducted on a 2014 green Ford Fusion which was being operated by a female driver. The driver produced a valid licence with a G2 classification.

Police issued two court summons; Speeding and Stunt Driving.

The driver is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, to answer to the charges.

According to the Highway Traffic Act, the vehicle has been impounded for seven days and the driver’s licence has been suspended for the same period of time.

Hamilton Police increased visibility over the long-weekend during a traffic blitz which concentrated on Distracted Driving and Speeding. A total of 427 speeding and 4 distracted driving tickets were issued from February 16 to 18, 2019.

The Red Hill Valley Parkway was also a focus this weekend as Hamilton Police assisted the City of Hamilton road crew with traffic safety during the 80km/hr sign changes. During this time four tickets were issued for “fail to move over for stopped emergency vehicle”.

Police would like to reiterate the “MOVE OVER” legislation requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle or tow truck parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law requires the driver to move over and leave one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle if it can be done safely. Drivers can face fines from $490 to $2,000 by failing to comply.

On Wednesday, February 6, 2019, shortly before 10:00 p.m. police were conducting speed enforcement westbound on Nikola Tesla Parkway at Ottawa Street North. At that time a light coloured Lexus sedan was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. The investigation revealed the vehicle was travelling at 86 km/hr in a posted 60 km/hr zone. Police initiated a traffic stop; however, the driver of the Lexus swerved and then accelerated in an attempt to evade police. Due to the icy road conditions police determined it was unsafe to pursue. A short time later police came across a collision in the area of Wilcox Street at Industrial Drive. It involved a single motor that had abruptly exited the roadway and crashed into a fence. Police determined this was the vehicle that fled from them earlier. The driver was immediately arrested.

Through investigation, police learned the licence of the driver was currently suspended and the validation on the plate was not authorized by the Ministry of Transportation. The driver also failed to produce the requested administrative documents.

The driver was released on scene with several court summons. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, March 7, 2019, to answer to the charges. The driver was not injured during the incident.

The vehicle was towed to a compound.

Between Saturday, December 15, 2018, and Sunday, December 19, 2018, Hamilton Police investigated driving incidents involving a grey BMW. Due to efforts by the driver, police were unable to safely conduct traffic stops; however, police were able to identify the driver. The investigation revealed the status of the suspect driver’s licence was disqualified for life, after multiple suspensions for driving infractions.

On Tuesday, December 18, 2018, shortly before 8:30 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to a disturbance call in the area of Dewitt Road and Highway #8, Stoney Creek. The parties involved left in a vehicle prior to police arrival. A short time later the vehicle was spotted by police and a traffic stop was conducted. The officer recognized one of the passengers as the person suspected to be responsible for several driving violations over the weekend. During those incidents, the driver was able to evade police. Additional officers were called for assistance and the suspect was arrested without incident.

A 21-year-old Stoney Creek man appeared in court on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, to answer to the charges.

Snow is just around the corner, so Hamilton Police are reminding drivers to begin adjusting their driving habits to the weather conditions.

Winter weather conditions can be variable and unpredictable, placing extra demands on your vehicle and driving skills.

The following is a list of safety tips that Hamilton Police would like for you to keep in mind:

• SNOW MEANS SLOW, all drivers are encouraged to reduce speed limits.
• Allow more leeway time in the morning for travelling to work or school.
• Give yourself more stopping distance between other vehicles, depending on the road conditions.
• Make sure tires and wipers are in great condition for winter driving.
• Make sure windows are clear of all snow and well defrosted before you begin your journey.
• Be on the lookout for pedestrians, because the days are getting shorter and there are more hours of darkness.
• Adjust driving habits to the conditions of the road at all times.
• Expect the unexpected. In winter conditions the possibility of black ice and whiteouts could be present along with the standard snow and slush conditions.
• Have a safety/survival kit on board. Flares, blanket, shovel, candles, matches, road salt, non-perishable food and a fully charged cell phone if possible

With a well-planned trip, a vehicle that is ready for winter conditions, and obeying the safety points above, everyone should arrive safely at their destination.

On Monday, September 17, 2018, members of the Hamilton Police Service, along with Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), deployed in Glanbrook for a commercial vehicle / heavy truck blitz. This came as a result of several complaints to police about heavy truck traffic travelling off the designated truck route in the area.

The blitz included staff from the MTO and Hamilton Police members from the Traffic Branch as well as Divisional Safety Officers from Divisions two and three.

The blitz resulted in the following:

• 35 stops
• 26 inspections
• 12 vehicle taken out of service
• 46% failure rate
• 26 Provincial Offence Notices issued
