Hamilton Police take another firearm off the streets and continue our fight against gun violence.

On Thursday, October 6, 2022, shortly after 7:00 p.m., Hamilton Police conducted a traffic stop after observing a motor vehicle containing three occupants, travelling the wrong direction on Mary Street.

During the traffic stop, it was learned that the driver was failing to comply with release conditions, stemming from another incident. 

The driver was placed under arrested and occupants asked to exit the vehicle.

While interacting with one of the occupants, police observed a handgun in the pant pocket of the occupant and they were arrested.

On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, Hamilton Police received a call from a citizen about a male asleep at the wheel of a 2016 Silver Dodge Journey. Police attended the area and were able to locate the vehicle, conduct a traffic stop and a 29-year-old male was arrested.

Through further investigation, police observed a quantity of illicit drugs including what appeared to be fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine.

Hamilton Police conducted a  traffic stop that lead to the arrest of two males and a loaded firearm taken off of our streets.

On Wednesday, June 1, 2022, shortly before 3:00a.m., Hamilton Police observed a vehicle travelling westbound on King Street East near Emerald Street North without a functioning rear license plate light.

A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle and persons within it, produced a small amount of crack cocaine, bullets and a loaded Glock firearm.

Police have charged two males with the following offences:

A traffic stop conducted in the area of Barton Street East and Lottridge Street has led to the seizure of a firearm, illicit drugs and the arrest of a 31-year-old Hamilton man.

On Wednesday, March 2, 2022, shortly after 01:00p.m., Hamilton Police observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed and aggressively over taking other vehicles on the road.

Through investigation it was learned, the driver of the motor vehicle was a suspended driver. Subsequently, a traffic stop was conducted and a 31-year-old male arrested.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, January 13, 2022, while conducting proactive patrol Hamilton Police observed a driver violate the Highway Traffic Act, subsequently a traffic stop was conducted and a 22-year-old male arrested.

The vehicle, a grey Toyota Camry was reported stolen. The vehicle was seized for further investigation, as a result police located a quantity of illicit drugs including methamphetamine and fentanyl. Police also located a loaded modified prohibited shotgun inside the vehicle.

Throughout the evening of Wednesday, December 29, 2021 and the early morning of Thursday, December 30, 2021, Hamilton Police patrol officers were able to observe two different vehicles in the downtown area in violation of the Highway Traffic Act.

In both incidents there was a strong odour of fresh cannabis emanating from the vehicle.

Through further investigation, police determined that in both of these separate non related traffic stops the drivers were in possession of illicit drugs, large sums of Canadian currency and other evidence to support the trafficking of illicit drugs.

A 26-year-old Hamilton man is facing several firearm-related charges after being stopped by an officer conducting traffic enforcement early on Saturday, September 12, 2020. His matter was addressed later that day in court.

On Saturday, September 12, 2020, shortly before 7:30 a.m., a Hamilton Police officer observed a grey Hyundai Accent travelling eastbound on York Boulevard approaching Dundurn Castle. The vehicle was operating at a speed that was greater than the posted speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver provided information that led police to concentrate efforts on verifying his identity. Through continued investigation, police located a handgun inside the cabin of the vehicle. The driver was placed under arrest. His identity was confirmed and he was taken into police custody for a bail hearing.

Later that day, the male had his matter heard at the John Sopinka Courthouse where he faced serval firearm-related charges.

After cutting off a vehicle, the driver was investigated and found to be in possession of drugs and cash. He is now facing charges related to drug trafficking, refusal to provide a breath sample and disobeying a court order. His mater is scheduled to be brought before the courts later today.

On Sunday, June 7, 2020, shortly after 10:00 p.m., while on proactive patrol a Hamilton Police officer observed a grey Honda Civic cut off another vehicle as it proceeded southbound on Queen Street from York Boulevard. The officer followed the vehicle gathering information. A traffic stop was conducted on King Street West at Queen Street North. The driver provided the appropriate documentation which confirmed he held a valid G2 driver status. While interacting with the driver, the officer detected an odour of alcohol coming from him.

Through continued investigation, the officer learned the driver was also in violation of a court-ordered curfew condition. The driver was arrested and searched. He was found to be in possession of a large sum of money. He subsequently refused to comply with providing a roadside breath sample.

A search of the driver’s area in the vehicle revealed the presence of a small powdery substance believed to be cocaine on the driver’s seat. As well, drug paraphernalia and a black satchel containing illicit drugs were discovered. Police seized the item as evidence.

The driver, a 21-year-old Hamilton man was taken into police custody. He was held for a bail hearing and his matter is scheduled to be addressed at the John Sopinka Courthouse later today.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, shortly after 4:30 p.m., a Hamilton police officer while on proactive patrol, observed a grey Jeep Cherokee near the intersection of Cannon Street and Edgemont Street. The vehicle which was stopped at the time, suddenly pulled forward cutting off the police cruiser. The officer was able to initiate a traffic stop in the area of Campbell Avenue and Province Street North. As police approached the vehicle, they noted two male occupants. During the interaction with the driver, police learned his license had been suspended by the Ministry of Transportation several years ago. The driver was arrested and the vehicle was seized for seven days as a result of Ministry guidelines.

Through continued investigation, police located evidence to support the trafficking of illicit drugs inside the vehicle. The driver and passenger were arrested in relation to the evidence seized.

They were both taken into police custody for a bail hearing. Their matters will be addressed at the John Sopinka Courthouse later today.

Hamilton Police conducted a traffic stop in downtown Hamilton and located a concealed handgun in the passenger’s waistband along with drugs and money. Two males have been brought into custody and charged with numerous criminal offences.

On February 11, 2020, shortly after 12:00 p.m., police noticed a grey coloured BMW travelling west on Barton Street. The vehicle plate was registered to a resident outside of Hamilton and the occupants did not match the registered owner’s age or description. Police stopped the vehicle at the intersection of King Street East and Wellington Street South in Hamilton.

The driver acknowledged he was driving with a G1 license which allowed the opportunity for Police to verify if the passenger was properly licensed to accompany the driver.

When the passenger stepped outside the vehicle, he ran from police but was caught a short distance away in the area of King Street East and Wellington Street North. The unknown male actively resisted police and made several attempts to reach towards his waistband. Police were able to safely arrest the male. During the search police located a loaded handgun inside his waistband along with drugs and money.

The other officers that remained placed the driver under arrest for drug and firearm-related offences. 

The two males were brought back to Central Custody with their bail opposed.

A firearm, illicit drugs, cash and other evidence to support the trafficking of drugs were seized after a police investigation. Five males were arrested and are now facing numerous criminal charges

On Thursday, November 28, 2019, shortly before 11: 00 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Parkdale Avenue North and Barton Street East, on a Mazda 3 sedan that was believed to be involved in criminal activity. The registered owner of the Mazda 3 was a suspended driver. The driver was confirmed to be the registered owner during which time illicit drugs and paraphernalia were observed in plain view. The five males inside the vehicle were arrested. Further investigation revealed the presence of additional drugs, multiple cellphones, cash and a loaded firearm.

The five males were taken into police custody and are scheduled to appear at the John Sopinka Courthouse today to answer to several criminal charges.

Evidence collected at the scene was seized for court proceedings.

On Sunday, June 9, 2019, shortly after 8:00 a.m., while on proactive patrol, police observed a black pick-up truck operating in the area of Barton Street East and Kensington Avenue North. The officer’s attention was drawn to the fact the vehicle was travelling faster than others. At that time it was noted the vehicle was not displaying a rear licence plate. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver failed to produce the necessary documents.

Through investigation, police determined the driver’s licence was suspended. He was placed under arrest and while police conducted a search of him he was found to be in possession of approximately 5 grams of Methamphetamine. He was advised of the additional charge.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of the following:

• Black pellet
• Bear spray
• Drug paraphernalia
• Undisclosed amount of Canadian currency

The driver was taken into police custody where police learned he was bound by several court orders. His arrest signified violations to those orders. He was advised of the additional charges.

The male is scheduled to appear at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Monday, June 10, 2019, to answer to the charges.

The vehicle was seized for seven days in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

The pellet gun and bear spray were submitted for destruction.

On Tuesday, April 16, 2019, shortly after 9:30 a.m., Hamilton Police were proactively patrolling the area of Main Street East and Emerald Street South when a grey Lexus sedan was observed with an expired validation sticker. A traffic stop was conducted and an investigation into the driver’s identity revealed he was bound by a court-ordered condition, ‘Not to attend the city of Hamilton with an exception.’ At that time there was no evidence to support the threshold for the exception was met. The 41-year-old driver was arrested for the violation. During the search of the male, police located drug paraphernalia and an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine in his possession. He was informed of the drug-related charge.

A further investigation revealed the presence of additional drug paraphernalia and a second undisclosed amount of methamphetamine within the vehicle. A 31-year-old male passenger was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and the driver was informed of the charge as well. The passenger was also found to be in possession of an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and a black BB gun.

As police continued their investigation, another quantity of crystal meth and a knife deemed to be prohibited by the Criminal Code of Canada were located.

Both males were taken into police custody. The driver was held for a bail hearing and will appear in court today.  Police issued two provincial offence notices to him in relation to Ontario Highway Traffic Act violations. The passenger was released and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, May 29, 2019.

The BB gun was turned over to the police for destruction.

On Thursday, April 11, 2019, shortly before midnight, Hamilton Police officers were on proactive patrol at the intersection of Ferguson Avenue North and Rebecca Street when they observed a grey 2000 GMC Sierra pick-up truck. The driver made a last minute decision to change the vehicle’s direction to avoid police. Several attempts were made to obtain the licence plate; however, it was obstructed by a tinted plate cover. A traffic stop was conducted and due to the vehicle’s dark tinted windows, police were unable to confirm the number of occupants and if they were wearing their seatbelts. Due to an inoperable window, the front passenger door was opened by an occupant at which time police noted the presence of a firearm inside the cabin. The vehicle’s occupants were immediately arrested and removed as police conducted an investigation. The firearm was examined and found to be an imitation.

The driver, a 37-year-old Dunnville man, provided several documents to police. At the same time, an undisclosed amount of crystal meth was located within his possession. He was advised of the drug charge and was released with a future court date of Wednesday, May 22, 2019. He was also issued a ticket in relation to the obstructed licence plate.

There were also two passengers in the vehicle. The rear seat passenger was released unconditionally and an investigation into the front seat passenger continued. He was searched and found to be in possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. Police also learned he was bound by two court orders and was in violation of existing conditions.

A 29-year-old Hamilton man was taken into police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, April 12, 2019, to answer the charges.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2019, shortly after midnight, police were patrolling in the area of Barton Street East and Parkdale Street North when a grey Mazda 3 vehicle was observed operating in a suspicious manner. A traffic stop was conducted and due to information gained police commenced an investigation into the driver’s level of sobriety. During the investigation, police learned the driver was in possession of a weapon. A preliminary search was conducted at which time evidence was located to support the possession of illicit drugs. The driver was arrested and found to be in possession of additional drugs. Police have seized the drugs and further evidence to support charges of drug trafficking.

An impairment test was conducted and the driver passed.

The vehicle was towed from the roadway and the registered owner was notified of the location for pick up.

The driver was taken into police custody and will appear in court today to answer to several charges.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, shortly after 5:00 a.m., a Hamilton Police officer on proactive patrol observed a blue Volkswagon Jetta near the intersection of Melvin Avenue and Parkdale Avenue. The officer conducted a mobile investigation into the status of the vehicle as a result of the driver’s actions. Police learned the vehicle’s permit had expired in 2018. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver failed to cooperate with police instruction and refused to identify herself. The driver was arrested under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. Through further investigation, information was obtained detailing the prohibited driving status of the driver in the province of Ontario. Additionally, she was also bound by several probation orders and had an outstanding warrant of arrest with a neighbouring police service.

The female was taken into police custody and appeared at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, to answer to several criminal charges.

Hamilton Police are reminding drivers that failing to identify upon request by police during an investigation, is an arrestable offence under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

On Monday, March 11, 2019, shortly before 6:30 p.m., police were in the area of Queenston Road and Parkdale Avenue South. At that time police observed the driver of a grey Ford Focus throw a handful of garbage out of the window onto the roadway and continue onwards. Police initiated a traffic stop. With police standing at the driver’s side door, the driver lowered her window to create a small gap. She refused to provide documents as requested by the officer and became argumentative. Several additional demands were made but the driver put her window up and drove away. Police followed without activating emergency equipment as the vehicle proceeded through several surveys. During the incident, police continuously monitored the driver’s actions – who obeyed rules of the road- along with the local traffic.

The vehicle stopped at a residence in the area of Greenhill Avenue and Bunker Hill Drive. Once again attempts were made to obtain information from the driver who again failed to comply. When instructed to exit the vehicle the driver did not follow instruction and kept her vehicle running. Due to the driver’s actions of noncompliance and the potential of the vehicle driving off again, police broke the driver’s side window and removed the keys from the ignition. The driver produced a second set of keys for the vehicle at which time efforts were made to remove her. Eventually, police were able to secure the driver.

A 50-year-old Hamilton woman was arrested for failing to identify under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. She was also issued several Provincial Offence Notices. Hamilton Police are reminding drivers that under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, a driver must identify themselves when requested by a police officer during an investigation.

The following charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act:

• Fail to surrender permit for vehicle
• Fail to surrender licence

On Monday, March 4, 2019, shortly after 1:00 a.m., police were conducting speed enforcement on westbound traffic at Queenston Road east of Red Hill Valley Parkway. At that time a black Toyota Camry was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. The investigation revealed the vehicle was operating at 145 km/hr in a posted 50 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver a 23- year-old Hamilton man was arrested for Stunt Driving.

The driver was issued a court summons for Stunt Driving. He is scheduled to appear in court in early April. The vehicle which is co-registered has been impounded for seven days.

On Monday, March 4, 2019, shortly before 12:00 a.m., while on proactive patrol, police observed as a grey Chevrolet Cruze travelling southbound on Kenilworth Avenue South approaching Monterey Avenue. The vehicle appeared to be travelling at a high rate of speed.

A traffic stop was conducted and during the conversation with the driver, the officer noted the fresh odour of cannabis from the motor vehicle's cabin area. Police then observed a small plastic bag of cannabis protruding from the sweatshirt pocket of the driver, which appeared to be unsealed. Through investigation, police seized a second bag of cannabis from within the cabin along with a plastic jar containing crack cocaine, over 500 unmarked cigarettes and drug paraphernalia.

The driver was subsequently arrested.

On Monday, February 18, 2019, shortly before noon, police on proactive patrol observed a silver Mercedes Benz travelling eastbound on Rymal Road, approaching Nebo Road. The vehicle conducted several movements which drew the attention of the officer. As police initiated a traffic stop, the vehicle continued onward and then entered a parking lot. A request was made for the driver to surrender the appropriate documents. He failed to produce the documents but verbally provided a name. Through investigation, police learned the name provided was false. It was determined the driver’s licence had been suspended for unpaid fines and a previous violation for driving while suspended. The driver was also bound by a court order with conditions of no association with a specified person and not to be in control of an automobile.

Also in the vehicle was a passenger. Police learned the passenger was the person specified in the driver’s court order. The passenger himself was bound by a court order with a no association condition that included the driver. Both males were arrested and transported to police custody. They were held for a bail hearing and will in court on Tuesday, February 19, 2019.

Recently, two traffic stops initiated as a result of expired validation tags led to additional charges being laid by police.

On Monday, January 28, 2019, shortly before 1:00 p.m., Hamilton Police were in the area of Bay Street North and King Street West when they observed a 2008 Ford Edge with an expired validation tag. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was unable to produce a valid driver’s licence or insurance documents for the vehicle. Through investigation, police determined the driver falsely identified himself as the registered owner of the vehicle, his father. Once the driver’s true identity was confirmed, police learned his driving status was unlicenced.

The driver was issued three Provincial Offence tickets and the vehicle was subsequently towed to a compound.

On Monday, January 28, 2019, shortly after 7:00 p.m., Hamilton Police observed a Dodge pick-up truck travelling westbound on Barton Street near East Avenue. At that time it was noted the validation tag appeared to be expired. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver produced the required documents. The investigation confirmed the driver’s licence status was suspended and the validation tag had expired in March 2018.

The driver was issued two court summons and is scheduled to appear at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Monday, February 25, 2019, to answer to the charges.

Yesterday, during two traffic stops for speeding on the Hamilton Mountain, police nabbed drivers who violated their licence conditions. One driver has been held for a bail hearing while the other was released with four court summons.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in the early afternoon, police initiated traffic enforcement on the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway and Upper Ottawa overpass. The focus was on traffic violations committed by westbound traffic. Shortly before 3:00 p.m., a black BMW sedan was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver attempted to obstruct police by providing misinformation. Through investigation, police determined the true identity of the driver. As such, police learned the driver was bound by court conditions, one being, not to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver was arrested and held for a bail hearing at the John Sopinka Courthouse.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, police were conducting traffic enforcement at the corner of Upper James Street and Alderlea Avenue, Hamilton. Shortly before 2:30 p.m., police initiated a traffic stop on a grey Mazda sedan. It was observed travelling northbound at a high rate of speed on Upper James Street. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle and as per his driver’s licence, must be accompanied by a G-class driver. Further investigation revealed the licence plate affixed to the vehicle was not authorized by the Ministry of Transportation and the driver failed to produce valid automobile insurance.

The driver was issued four court summons.

Police continue to investigate the licence plates for the potential criminal offence of, possession of stolen property.

On Friday, December 28, 2018, shortly before 2:00 a.m., Hamilton Police officers were on proactive patrol when a grey coloured Honda Odyssey Minivan was observed travelling eastbound on Barton Street East near Kenora Avenue. The actions of the vehicle’s driver appeared to be suspicious in nature so a query of the licence plate was conducted. Results from the query revealed the plate was not authorized for the vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted and further investigation confirmed the driver had an outstanding warrant for his arrest with the Halton Regional Police Service. Additionally, the status of the driver’s licence was suspended. During the interaction, police determined the vehicle’s occupants were both under court conditions in relation to Probation and Recognizance Orders. The driver, a 39 –year-old Hamilton man was arrested in relation to the outstanding warrant. The passenger, a 42- year-old Hamilton woman was arrested for violating her release conditions.

The parties will appear in court today to answer to the charges.

On Saturday, December 1, 2018, shortly after 10:00 p.m., police observed a black Acura SUV in the area of Queen Street South and Charlton Avenue West, Hamilton. An investigation of the licence plate confirmed it was registered to a silver Mazda. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as a G2 licence holder. He produced his driver’s licence, the ownership for the vehicle but failed to provide proof of insurance.

The driver, a 24-year-old Hamilton man, was arrested for using plates not authorized for the vehicle. During the interaction, police noted the odour of alcohol on his breath. Further investigation revealed the driver had consumed alcohol prior to operating the vehicle. As a G2 licence holder, the law requires a zero blood alcohol content.

The driver was released with a 24-hour driving suspension for the alcohol infraction.

He is expected to appear in court on January 11, 2019, to answer to three court summons for the following offences:

• Use plates not authorized for vehicle
• Owner operate motor vehicle on a highway, no insurance
• Novice driver, Blood Alcohol Concentrate above zero

The driver’s licence was seized along with the vehicle’s licence plates.

On Sunday, December 2, 2018, shortly before 3:30 a.m., police observed a silver BMW sedan, operating on Cathcart Street near Wilson Street, Hamilton. An investigation into the vehicle’s licence plate revealed the motor vehicle was reported stolen from the Toronto area the day before. The vehicle was stopped by police near Wellington Street North and Kelly Street. The occupants of the vehicle were arrested for being in possession of stolen property.

During the incident, police located an undisclosed amount of Crystal Meth in the vehicle’s cabin. Due to previous court conditions the two Hamilton men were taken into custody and appeared in court later that day.

From March 10 to March 18, Hamilton Police Service Officers were deployed with a focus on Aggressive Driving, combined with Speeding.

• Distracted Driving – 10 Tickets

In comparison, during the same period last year, Hamilton Police issued:

On Wednesday, January 10, 2018, shortly after 2:00 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a U-Haul rental van at the intersection of Cannon Street West and James Street North in the City of Hamilton. The vehicle was observed driving suspiciously northbound on James Street South . Through investigation, police learned the vehicle had been reported as stolen.

The occupants were placed under arrest and a subsequent search resulted in the seizure of several illicit drugs.

On January 4, 2018 at 11:15 p.m., an officer noticed a black Honda travelling northbound on Wentworth Street North near Burton Street in Hamilton. The driver was operating the vehicle with an expired valtag. The vehicle was pulled over and 2.4 kilograms of marijuana was found inside, as well as 52 grams of marijuana resin along with other paraphernalia.

The estimated street value is $25,000. This amount of marijuana would be equivalent to 5,000 joints at $5 a joint.

Zachary Thomson (26 years) Smithville has been charged with:

• Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Marijuana and Resin x 2
• Proceeds of Crime under $5,000

Thomson will be returning back to the John Sopkina Courthouse on January 24, 2018.
