The Professional Development Division oversees Professional Standards, SIU Liaison, Quality Assurance, Risk Management, Corporate Planning, Policy Development and Training within the Hamilton Police Service. The Branches of the Professional Standards Division work together closely to deal with improving organizational and individual performance.
What We Do
Professional Standards Branch
The Professional Standards Branch is responsible for investigating and facilitating the resolution of both internal and external complaints in an impartial and professional manner, pursuant to the Police Services Act and policies of the HPS. This area liaises with the independent government body known as the Special Investigations Unit regarding incidents where Hamilton Police Officers are directly or indirectly involved in an event in which a citizen has been seriously injured, dies or alleges a sexual assault.
This section is responsible for ensuring our police service complies with all Ministry standards and applicable legislation. This unit is responsible for all internal audits relating to areas of organizational risk and policy compliance. Please click here for more information on Quality Assurance.
The Risk Management Branch is responsible for the identification and evaluation of risk to the organization, the public and our members. Programs, policies and audits are used to monitor and eliminate risk.
This area is responsible for business planning and serves in an advisory capacity to our strategic management process. Please click here for more information on the Corporate Planning Branch.
This section is responsible for the development and maintenance of all Policies and Procedures within the Hamilton Police Service.
The Training Branch is responsible for the administration and coordination of training provided to all members of the Hamilton Police Service in accordance with the Ontario Police College requirements, Adequacy Standards, legislation, and internal policies and procedures. This training includes: academic, de-escalation and use of force training.
