About the YIPI Program

The Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) is an eight-week summer employment program designed to provide young people with meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to their communities. This program offers students hands-on experience in policing and community engagement, helping them develop valuable skills while gaining insight into law enforcement.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the YIPI program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 18 years old.
  • Be a full-time high school student within the City of Hamilton.
  • Reside within the City of Hamilton.
  • Be legally allowed to work in Canada.
  • Have no criminal record.

The application period for the Summer 2025 YIPI program is March 7 to 28.

Program Highlights & Training

Through YIPI, students will build self-confidence, gain leadership experience, and make a positive impact within their communities. The program fosters personal growth while encouraging participants to inspire change in those around them.

What to Expect:
  • Approximately 10 participants between the ages of 15-18.
  • Designed for students who have had little to no previous exposure to policing.
  • Opportunities to engage with community organizations.
  • A fast-paced, hands-on learning environment.
Certificates & Training: Participants will receive training in:
  • Standard First Aid, CPR-C, and AED
  • Worker Health & Safety
  • Leadership Development
  • Diversity & Bias Awareness
  • Community Outreach

As a YIPI student, you will take part in community-driven events and initiatives, including:

  • Community presentations and workshops
  • Fundraisers and public outreach
  • Engagement with local organizations and police services
  • Police Service Exposure

Beyond community involvement, YIPI students will gain a unique perspective into the various divisions of policing. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into law enforcement, teamwork, and public service.
