Hamilton Police are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in a distraction theft targeting a senior in Flamborough.
On September 8, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a female suspect entered the victim’s home under the guise of knowing them. She embraced the victim with a hug and kiss while placing fake jewelry around her neck. During this interaction, the suspect unclasped and stole the victim’s genuine gold necklace.
The suspect is described as:
- Female, approximately 40 years old
- About 5’7” tall, medium build
- Last seen leaving in a dark vehicle with visible front-end damage
This tactic—commonly used against seniors—often involves suspects offering jewelry, hugs, or thanks for directions as a way to get close and steal personal valuables.
Distraction thefts are on the rise in Hamilton. In 2021, there were just 9 reported cases, compared to 54 in 2024. So far in 2025, there have already been 43 cases reported between January and August alone, nearly matching last year’s full total.
Hamilton Police want to remind community members—especially seniors and their families—about distraction thefts:
- Be cautious if approached by a stranger who insists on hugging you or giving you jewelry.
- Decline unsolicited offers of gifts or gestures of affection from people you do not know.
- Keep valuable jewelry secured and avoid wearing expensive items while alone in public spaces.
- If you feel unsafe or pressured, remove yourself from the situation and call police immediately.
Sharing this information with elderly relatives, friends, and neighbours can help prevent others from becoming victims of this type of crime.
Hamilton Police are releasing video footage of the incident and asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Division 30 Criminal Investigation Branch at 905-546-3851. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online at crimestoppershamilton.com.
