Hamilton Police Launches Military Veterans Wellness Program

Hamilton Police Service is proud to announce the launch of the Military Veterans Wellness Program (MVWP), an initiative designed to support military Veterans and enhance the capacity of law enforcement to connect them with essential services and care.

The MVWP equips all sworn Hamilton Police officers with specialized training that deepens their understanding of the unique experiences and needs of Veterans. This training empowers officers to recognize signs of distress, engage more effectively during interactions, and make timely referrals to appropriate social and mental health supports.

This program allows us to better serve those who have served us. By understanding the experiences of Veterans, we can respond with empathy, build trust, and ensure they get the support they deserve,” said Detective Constable Dan Jaworski, MVWP Service Program Director.

The program is available to anyone who has served in the Canadian Armed Forces, including Veterans of other countries now residing in Canada. Participation is not dependent on prior police involvement; any eligible Veteran may be referred to the program.

Since adopting the program, Hamilton Police Service has made seven referrals. Veterans are typically contacted within one business day of referral, ensuring timely access to the support and services they need.

Originally developed by the Toronto Police Service in partnership with the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans Affairs Canada, the Royal Canadian Legion, Operational Stress Injury Social Support, and other agencies, the MVWP was launched in 2022. Hamilton Police Service formally adopted the program in 2024, strengthening its commitment to support the dignity, well-being, and success of every Veteran in the Hamilton community.
