The Hamilton Police Service has recognized a rise in youth crime as it relates to stolen autos, violent assaults and robberies that involve swarmings, bear spray, knives and firearms. This came to a boiling point in October 2024 after a fifteen year old was tragically killed after an ongoing dispute between youths from different high schools.
These issues have lead the Hamilton Police to assign additional resources to Division 3 under the umbrella of Project Street Light. The mission of this project is to suppress criminal behavior involving youth, identify and hold accountable those responsible, and to restore a sense of safety and security for all residents within the City of Hamilton by proactively addressing and responding to youth related robberies, assaults, vehicle thefts and disorderly behaviour.
On May 29, 2025 officers were in the area of Upper Wentworth Street when they observed a group of known youths, some of which were actively violating their court ordered conditions. Police placed the four youths under arrest and discovered that the group had just stolen items from unsuspecting patrons at a nearby recreation center. Notably, Police recovered vehicle keys, a wallet, and a diamond engagement ring.
