Summer is officially here, and Hamilton Police would like to offer some helpful reminders to keep our roads safe and problem free this busy summer season.
With more people outside enjoying the warmer weather, we’re encouraging all road users to stay alert and practice safe behaviours. Here are three key safety tips for the season:
Tip 1 – Drive Cautiously
As schools break for the summer, there will be an increase in children and teens playing outdoors. Whether they’re riding bikes, skateboarding, or playing tag near a park, drivers are reminded to proceed with caution. Children may unintentionally wander onto the roadway. Please slowdown in residential areas and near parks, and stay alert.
Tip 2 – Know the Rules for Electric Scooters
Electric scooters (E-scooters) are becoming a popular way to travel, but many operators may not be aware of the rules outlined in the Highway Traffic Act.
- E-scooters are not permitted on sidewalks.
- They must be used in bike lanes or as close as possible to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
- Operators must be at least 16 years old, and those under 18 are required to wear a helmet.
A full list of rules is available here
Tip 3 – Cyclist Awareness
Sharing the road safely benefits everyone. Cyclists must obey all traffic laws, signs, and signals. Riders are encouraged to wear bright clothing, signal their turns, and avoid sudden swerving. Motorists should always provide space to cyclists when passing, be cautious in busy areas, and remain patient. Giving cyclists time and room to maneuver can help prevent serious collisions.
These are just a few important reminders to help keep our roads safe throughout the summer. Hamilton Police encourage drivers to continue practicing safe driving by obeying posted speed limits, avoiding distractions, and driving sober.
Safe driving is smart driving. Let’s all do our part to make this a safe summer for everyone.
