Hamilton Police YIPI Students Begin Summer Program

Hamilton Police Service recently welcomed 10 high school students from across the city as part of the 2025 Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) summer program.

Funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, the provincially supported program gives youth aged 15 to 18 the opportunity to explore a future in policing while gaining valuable work experience and giving back to their community.

Over the next eight weeks, students will work alongside members of the Community Engagement Unit, participating in outreach initiatives, public safety education, and special events. From assisting at community gatherings to supporting crime prevention programs, YIPI students play an active role in helping build safer, more connected neighbourhoods.

“The YIPI program opens doors for youth to see policing up close and understand the positive impact they can have in our community,” says Chief Frank Bergen. “This is also a valuable opportunity for our members to connect with our next generation of leaders.”

The Youth in Policing Initiative supports the development of leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, while fostering trust and understanding between police and youth.
