Hamilton Police have arrested a woman in connection with a theft that occurred during the aftermath of the July 11, 2025, fatal shooting in the city’s downtown core.
As police and citizens rendered aid to the victim of the brazen daylight shooting at King Street East and James Street North, one member of the public stepped in to help. While providing assistance to 26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie, who tragically lost her life in the incident, this Good Samaritan became the victim of an opportunistic theft.
The individual’s purse—containing personal identification, debit cards, and other valuables—was taken from the scene. Following an extensive investigation involving surveillance footage, bank transaction analysis, and multiple interviews, police identified the accused as Chala OGDEN, a 35-year-old woman of Hamilton.
OGDEN has been charged with the following offences:
- Theft Under $5000
- Fraud Under $5000 ×2
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 ×2
- Use Credit Card ×2
- Possess Credit Card ×2
- Fail to Comply with Probation
Hamilton Police executed a number of investigative steps, including the review of local surveillance systems and store transaction records. OGDEN was arrested without incident and remains in custody.
This incident serves as a reminder that while tragic events often bring out the best in our community, there are unfortunately individuals who attempt to take advantage of moments of crisis. We continue to commend the courage and compassion shown by those who assisted Belinda that day, and we remain committed to holding those who exploit such moments accountable.
The investigation remains ongoing. For those who wish to provide information anonymously, please consider reaching out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit your anonymous tips online at Crime Stoppers Hamilton's Website.
