Fraud is the act of obtaining money, services or property by deceit. Hundreds of scams are used daily, incurring losses in the millions of dollars. 

 
Minimize your Risk of Fraud


Financial gain is admittedly the reason behind most Identity and Mass Marketing Frauds.  There are steps you can take to protect yourself and your information.

  • Never enter your personal, credit card or online account information on a website that you are not certain is genuine. 
  • Check the website address carefully. Scammers often set up fake websites with very similar addresses. 
  • Never give out personal bank information over the telephone/email 
  • Destroy personal information, don’t just throw it out. You should cut up, burn or shred old bills, statements or cards. 
  • Never agree to withdraw large sums of cash from your account and send it to a stranger 
  • If you are suspicious about a transaction, check with family/friends and/or the Police before sending any money. 
  • Lottery agencies will never ask a winner to pay any fees up front to receive a prize, lottery or sweepstake. 
  • If the offer sounds suspicious or too good to be true, it probably is. 
  • Resist pressure to “act now”.  Don’t let suspects pressure you into making quick decisions about money or investments.  

Reporting A Fraud

If you are a victim of a fraud, you may report it at the reception desk of any Hamilton Police Station or by contacting our Fraud Intake Officer at 905-546-4514. 

You should also report your fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1– 888-495-8501

Please note: If you suspect you are a victim of Identity Theft or if you have lost/stolen bank cards or credit cards or cheques you should report it immediately using the following steps:
 

  1. Contact the government agencies, service agencies or financial institutions first to alert them to the fraud and to cancel the card and/or close the account. Credit Cards and Debit Cards are the property of the issuing card company. Request that your bank/card company forward your case to their corporate security department for follow up investigation. 
  2. File a Theft, Lost Property or Identity Theft report with the Hamilton Police. 
  3. Flag your credit account with Credit Rating Agencies  -  Trans Union 1-877-525-3823 / Equifax 1-800-465-7166
  4. Report an identity theft fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1–888-495-8501 

Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) is jointly managed by the RCMP, OPP and the Competition Bureau of Canada.  The CAFC provides advice on fraud matters and steps to take to protect yourself.  They also collect fraud data and identify trends and connections.  They are a valuable resource for public education and awareness of frauds.   Refer to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website at www.antifraudcentre.ca .  Their site includes identification of current scams, lists and explanations of fraud schemes, tips on how to protect yourself and explains identity theft and tips to combat it.
