Downtown Safety Summit Report

Downtown Safety Summit Report
Hamilton Police Service has released the Downtown Safety Summit Report following a community meeting held on May 19, 2026, that brought together more than 85 participants, including business leaders, public sector representatives, civic leaders, community agencies, and public safety partners.
The summit focused on identifying collaborative solutions to address ongoing challenges impacting Hamilton’s downtown core, including community safety, social disorder, mental health and addictions, and perceptions of safety. Participants shared insights, experiences, and ideas aimed at strengthening community well-being and supporting a safer downtown core.
Through facilitated breakout discussions and participant voting, social disorder and open public drug use were identified as the top priorities requiring coordinated action. These priorities were determined through an anonymous participant vote, reflecting concerns and perspectives shared by attendees.
The report highlights additional key themes identified throughout the summit, including improved coordination between agencies and partners, increased supports for vulnerable individuals, enhanced reporting mechanisms, visible safety initiatives, and continued advocacy for long-term systemic solutions.
Since the summit, Hamilton Police Service has already advanced several initiatives, including:
- Establishing a new downtown substation on King Street at Jackson Square
- Renewing advocacy for a full-time Federal Drug Prosecutor
- Implementing additional reporting mechanisms related to social disorder and community concerns
Hamilton Police Service would like to thank all participants, organizers, and community partners whose contributions helped make the summit a success.
