The mandate of the Vice and Drugs Unit is to investigate vice and drug crimes within the City of Hamilton in order to enhance and improve the quality of life in our community. The unit acts as a support for all members of the Hamilton Police Service as well as outside agencies.

Vice and Drug investigators are responsible for enforcing provisions of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act that deal with the cultivation and trafficking of illegal drugs and substances. Education on drug abuse issues is an important priority for the unit. Investigators provide dozens of presentations to community groups and organizations each year.

The Vice and Drugs Unit conducts investigations involving incidents of human trafficking and contains officers who are specially trained for this type of offence. Investigators proactively reach out to women working in the sex trade to check on their well-being, develop rapport, offer community resources and provide safety planning. Investigators give presentations to community organizations who work with victims of human trafficking, women involved in the sex trade and vulnerable groups who may be more susceptible to exploitation.

The unit is responsible for investigations involving pornography, gambling offences and Liquor Licence Act violations in the City of Hamilton.

Investigators work diligently to ensure that proceeds of crimes, from vice and drug related offences, are tracked and seized.  This removes the incentive to commit such crimes in our community.
