Hamilton Police Assist with Suspicious Package at Quantum Murray

On Tuesday, July 31, 2018, shortly before 10:00 am, Hamilton Police responded to a Suspicious Circumstances call in the area of Strathearn Avenue Hamilton.

A truck operator delivering to Quantum Murray had picked up a load of metal waste and delivered it to the facility on Strathearn Avenue. Upon entering the yard, the load set of the radiation detectors. Employees of Quantum Murray investigated and located the source of the radiation. The radiological source was moved to another area of the property. The area around the radiological source was cordoned off. Employees of Quantum Murray and two neighbouring facilities were removed from the area for precautionary reasons. The Hamilton Fire Department's HAZMAT team, the Hamilton Police Service's EDU officers and Nuclear employees from McMaster attended to assist with identifying and detecting the radiological source. The radiation levels emitted from the package was determined to be safe. The radiological material was removed from the property to be disposed of properly.

There were no safety issues to the public or the environment.
