Hamilton Police Seek Assistance in ATM Thefts

ATM machines are being targeted in various areas around the city and Hamilton Police are looking for assistance in identifying suspects.

The Hamilton Police BEAR Unit is currently investigating a rash of early morning break and enters into Hamilton area businesses. The suspects are gaining entry into the stores by driving vehicles through the entrances to the buildings and then targeting the ATM machines. These suspects are causing significant damage to the buildings during the entries.

The most recent occurrence was on February 13, 2018, to the Spring Grill Restaurant located at 1441 Upper James Street in Hamilton. At approximately 4:45 a.m., three suspects used a stolen SUV to smash through the front window of the restaurant and knocked over the ATM. The suspects then removed the ATM machine before fleeing the scene.

The Hamilton Police Service urges businesses with ATMs to guard themselves against smash-and-grab thefts by moving the machines away from windows or doors. Ensure the machines are in view of CCTV and that they are affixed by a chain or bolted to the floor. Businesses should ensure the machines are emptied on a regular basis to limit the amount of cash inside.
