Increasing Aggressive Behaviour by Youth at County Fairs

The Hamilton Police Service has observed a concerning uptick in youth-related robberies and swarming incidents at community festivals and fairs over the summer. These incidents have raised concerns within the community, and the Hamilton Police Service is taking measures to address these issues and ensure the safety of festival-goers.

On Friday, August 4, 2023, just before 10:30 p.m., an incident unfolded when a group of youths surrounds a young male, ultimately resorting to physical violence and robbing him of his cross-body bag. Police responded to the incident located and arrested a 15-year-old male for Robbery.

On Saturday, August 26, 2023, similar incidents occurred at the Peach Festival, with multiple reports from concerned parents about children being victimized by other youth. Additionally, various physical altercations among teenagers were reported throughout the duration of the festival.

On Saturday, September 16, 2023, at approximately 7:15 p.m. Hamilton Police responded to a physical altercation between two youth females at the Binbrook Fair, in which over 50 onlookers were not only present but also actively encouraging the incident by filming it. The officers eventually gained control and diffused the situation.

As we lead into the Ancaster Fair this weekend and the Rockton Fair next month, it is essential to emphasize that our intention is not to discourage attendance at these cherished community events, but to enhance safety and security.

In light of recent events, the Hamilton Police Service would like to issue a public advisory and offer safety tips to ensure everyone’s well-being at these gatherings:

Safety Tips:

  1. Avoid Displaying Valuables: conceal valuable items such as smartphones, jewelery, and wallets to minimize the risk of becoming a target.
  2. Travel in Groups: Whenever possible, attend festivals and fairs with a group of friends or family members to enhance safety and deter potential incidents.
  3. Stay vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If something feels off or suspicious, do not hesitate to seek assistance from event security or the police.

The Hamilton Police Service remains committed to the safety and security of all community members. We encourage everyone to enjoy these festivals responsibly and look out for on another.
