K9 Partners Sniff out Car Thief

A 19-year-old Hamilton man will appear in court today after the stolen vehicle he was driving was located by OnStar. The male bailed out on the vehicle on foot to a local compound but was sniffed out by Police Service Dog Armour and his handler. He is now facing several criminal charges.

On Sunday, April 7, 2019, shortly after 10:30 p.m., Hamilton Police were dispatched to a residence in the area of Dunsmure Road and Leinster Avenue South for reports of a stolen auto. The victim informed police she was inside a residence for a brief time and when she returned she found her vehicle, a 2017 Buick Enclave had been stolen. She advised she was in possession of the keys and the vehicle is equipped with a push start ignition along with OnStar monitoring service. At that time of the theft, her purse and other personal belongings were inside the vehicle.

During the investigation, police were notified by OnStar that the vehicle had been located and they had the capability of safely stopping the vehicle via the onboard monitoring system. With police officers in position, OnStar brought the vehicle to a stop in the area of Fifty Road and South Service Road, Stoney Creek. The driver exited the vehicle and despite efforts by police, he was able to flee to an industrial compound. K9 was called to the scene as Hamilton Police and two neighbouring agencies secured a perimeter. The male was located hiding underneath a trailer.

A 19-year-old Hamilton man was taken into police custody. Through investigation, police learned he was bound by a court order with several conditions.

The male was held for a bail hearing scheduled for today.
