Police Investigate Cyclist: Locate Methamphetamine

Hamilton Police on proactive patrol investigated an erratic riding cyclist. The cyclist failed to follow police instruction and attempted to flee. He was arrested and found to be in possession of Methamphetamine. A 35-year-old Hamilton man will appear in court later today to answer to several charges.

On Sunday, March 17, 2019, shortly after 9:00 p.m., police were on proactive patrol in the area of James Street North and Wilson Street. At that time officers observed a male riding a bicycle unsafely in the intersection. After conducting several circles on the road, the cyclist proceeded eastbound on Wilson Street where he was nearly struck by motor vehicles as he rode without care, narrowly escaping collisions with several passing vehicles. His actions led police to initiate a traffic stop to determine if the cyclist was under the influence of a foreign substance. With emergency equipment activated police instructed the cyclist to stop and approach the police vehicle. He chose to ride off into oncoming traffic and to further his escape; he began darting in and out of commercial properties. Eventually, the cyclist crashed his bicycle as he was unsuccessful in ‘jumping’ a curb. He attempted to continue onward on foot but was immediately secured by police. He was arrested and a subsequent search of the male resulted in police locating an undisclosed amount of Methamphetamine.

An investigation into the identity of the cyclist revealed he was bound by a court order. His involvement in this occurrence violated one of the conditions within the order.

The cyclist was taken into police custody and is scheduled to appear in bail court today to answer to several criminal charges. The cyclist has also been issued Provincial Offence Notices related to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

The cyclist was not injured as a result of the incident.
