School Bus Safety Enforcement Week

Hamilton Police Service is reminding drivers that yellow school buses are back on the road and drivers should be practising safe driving when near school buses.

  • Slow down – Reduce your speed and obey the signs. The speed limit in school zones and near playgrounds is 40km/hr. If travelling 20 km/hr over the speed limit you could be facing a $95 fine and 3 demerit points.
  • Stop for School buses – If a school bus is displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, traffic in both directions must stop. You may only continue when the lights stop flashing. Failing to stop for a school bus could result in a $490 fine and 6 demerit points.
  • Fail to Yield to Pedestrians at Crosswalks - Drivers must watch and pay attention to pedestrians at crosswalks, especially in school areas with children. Not doing so can result in a $380 fine and 4 demerit points.
  • Impeding Traffic – Consider the safety concerns when you stop your vehicle in an undesignated location. You put your child and other children at risk.

Hamilton Police will be focusing their attention towards School Bus Safety Enforcement from September 4 to 15, 2018. For more Back to School safety tips, visit www.hamilton.ca/backtoschool or catch our safety video at https://youtu.be/mp1MmKmtOv4
