Suspicious Male Pushing Shopping Cart Arrested for Auto Theft

A 32-year-old Hamilton man will appear in court on Thursday, July 18, 2019, to answer to charges related to the theft of an SUV and the possession of burglary tools.

On Friday, June 21, 2019, shortly after 1:30 p.m., the owner of a 2015 Toyota Rav 4 SUV left his vehicle locked in the parking lot of 778 King Street. When he returned nearly an hour later, his vehicle was gone. He confirmed with the assistance of video surveillance, a lone male was seen pacing around the vehicle before gaining entry and driving off.

On Sunday, June 23, 2019, shortly after 9:00 a.m., police received information about a suspicious person in the area of Wentworth Street South and Delaware Avenue. Through investigation, police learned he was the suspect involved in the stolen Rav 4. The male at the time was in possession of a shopping cart that contained tools believed to be used to commit break and enter offences as well as possible stolen items. He was placed under arrest and taken into police custody.

A short time later the SUV was located in a nearby alleyway and returned to the owner.

The male was subsequently released and is scheduled to appear at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Thursday, July 18, 2019, to answer to criminal charges.
