High-End Winter Jacket Robberies on the Rise

Hamilton Police are warning the public of an increase in the number of street robberies involving high-end winter jackets. Over the past few weeks, seventeen individuals have been targeted for their winter coats in the downtown and west Hamilton neighbourhoods.

Victims have generally been wearing Canada Goose or Moose Knuckle brands and have been swarmed by a group of youths or the perpetrator has brandished a weapon before demanding the victim's coat. The coats may then be sold through social media platforms or through word-of-mouth.

Arrests have been made in some cases but the involved accused persons are youths who cannot be named under the YCJA.

Hamilton Police are reminding the public to take measures to avoid being a victim of a street robbery:

  • Do not walk alone, especially after dark
  • Follow the safest route possible. Avoid shortcuts and deserted areas. Try to keep to well lit, busy streets.
  • Walk with a purpose and be aware of your surroundings.

It is also important to report a robbery to the police as soon as possible. The faster police can respond, the greater the chance of an arrest. If you are a victim or witness a robbery in progress, call 911 immediately.

If you have any information that you believe could assist police with the investigation into these crimes, you are asked to contact the Central Criminal Investigation Division at 905-546-3833 or email [email protected]
