Hamilton Police continued with the fire investigation at 241 Gibson Street North and found the fire to be arson. On January 16, 2019, a male party turned himself in and now faces criminal charges.

On January 10, 2019, police attended 241 Gibson Street North, Hamilton to assist the Hamilton Fire Department with a three-level apartment fire. When police and fire arrived, an apartment on the third floor was engulfed in flames and spreading to the roof. All residents living inside were evacuated safely, without injury. There was significant damage to the home and residents have been relocated to other accommodations.

Hamilton Police continued their investigation and formed grounds to arrest Steven Slater of Hamilton.

On January 16, 2019, Slater turned himself in at Central Police Station.

Slater was lodged into custody with his bail opposed.
