Hamilton Police are reminding the public about the danger of ice shelves near bodies of water.

The ice shelves that have formed on the Lake Ontario beach strip and adjacent areas may be picturesque but these large ice formations are extremely dangerous. The ice and frozen waters present many hazards, both seen and unseen.

The uneven terrain and jagged ice formations can cause serious injury. The hidden cavities could collapse, and an individual could easily fall into icy water and any unexpected and sudden immersion in the frigid waters can result in cardiac arrest, hypothermia and drowning.

Hamilton Police are making the public aware that these ice shelves are very dangerous and should be avoided.
