Hamilton Police Major Crime Unit Investigating City’s 5th Homicide

About 12:20 a.m. on May 31, 2019, Hamilton Police responded to a disturbance call involving a knife in the area of Sherman Avenue North and Case Street, Hamilton.

Police officers arrived a short time later and located a group of individuals who advised they had been celebrating the Toronto Raptors victory at a nearby residence. They were outside the residence when they were approached by a male, who was driven to the location in a red Volkswagen Jetta. The male suspect confronted them about a female in their company while producing a knife. He then stabbed one of the males in the group before running northbound towards the awaiting Jetta. The group of males gave chase in an attempt to apprehend the assailant but were unsuccessful. As they did so the victim staggered southbound alone then turned into a nearby alleyway where he collapsed.

After speaking with the group, police located the male with a significant stab wound to his upper body. Officers conducted CPR until EMS arrived and transported him to the Hamilton General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators spoke to the victim’s family. They requested time to contact extended family members prior to releasing their loved one’s name. The family has advised investigators that this has now been accomplished. Police are now able to identify the victim as 23-year-old Tyquan Brown. Mr Brown is from Hamilton and was not known to police.

The suspect vehicle was located near Bayfront Park and a knife was also seized, it’s involvement in the incident has not been confirmed.

Hamilton Police secured three scenes in relation to the homicide. Investigators have received cooperation from a number of witnesses and are continuing to canvass the scenes for additional witnesses and surveillance footage.

Investigators have been able to identify the person responsible for the murder of Tyquan Brown. He is 20-year-old Dylon Moniz Duarte of Hamilton and an arrest warrant for First Degree murder has been issued.

Police are asking that anyone who sees Dylon Duarte call 911. Members of the public should not approach him themselves as he is still considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators also wish to remind friends, family and associates of Dylon Duarte that it is a criminal offence to assist or aide him in evading his arrest and anyone doing so could face charges of Accessory After the Fact to Murder.
