Robbery Suspect Arrested While Fleeing the Scene

After being robbed, the victim flagged down a police officer. At the same time, a witness to the robbery contacted police. A short time later the suspect was arrested as he attempted to make good his escape by taxi. He will appear in court today.

On Thursday, February 21, 2019, shortly after 5:30 p.m., the victim was walking in the area of Wentworth Street North and Cannon Street East when he was approached by a male who demanded he turn over the money he had in his hands. The victim refused to comply and the suspect produced what appeared to be a handgun and made a second demand. The victim surrendered an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency and the suspect fled the scene.

At the same time, a witness to the incident contacted police communications and provided details. Officers were in the area investigating another incident when they were approached by the victim who told them of the event. Along with victim they attended a parking lot at the corner of Cannon Street East and Wentworth Street North where the suspect was observed entering a taxi cab. Additional police units responded and with the information provided by the victim, police believed the suspect was armed. He was advised he was under arrest and for safety reasons ordered to the ground to be handcuffed. During the process, police observed the suspect discard an object under the taxi. Once the suspect was secured police recovered the object. A Crossman Vigilante BB Gun has been seized by police as evidence. A search of the suspect resulted in the recovery of the money stolen from the victim.

The investigation into the suspect, a 37- year-old man of no fixed address, resulted in additional charges being laid in relation to court-ordered conditions.

The suspect is being held for a bail hearing scheduled for today.
