Wanted Man Attempts to Escape Police

Hamilton Police have investigated an early morning speeder. After attempting to escape, the driver was taken into police custody. The investigation led to charges related to alcohol and drugs, driving offences and the identification of a wanted party.

On Wednesday, March 6, 2019, shortly after 12:30 a.m., while on mobile speed enforcement, police observed a Lexus Crossover vehicle travelling on Highway 6 in the area of Concession 6, at a high rate of speed. The investigation confirmed the vehicle was operating at 127 Km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. With emergency equipment activated, attempts were made to conduct a traffic stop; however, the driver failed to comply. Eventually, the vehicle pulled onto the shoulder where it was boxed in by police. The driver attempted to escape by repeatedly engaging contact between his vehicle and police vehicles. Officers were able to successfully remove the driver from his vehicle and he was placed under arrest. A search of the vehicle’s cabin resulted in the recovery of evidence related to readily accessible alcohol and cannabis.

An investigation into the driver’s status revealed he was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and his licence had been suspended. Additionally, police learned of two outstanding warrants of arrest for the driver from neighbouring police services related to a violent crime incident and failing to appear in court for a previous alcohol-related driving offence.

The driver was taken into police custody and is expected to appear at the John Sopinka Courthouse later today to answer to several charges.
