Online Rental Scammer Arrested

Hamilton Police received information in late 2017 from numerous victims that they had fallen prey to an online fraudster who had taken deposits from potential renters all for the same residence.

It is alleged that a female and her boyfriend had rented a central mountain home, and shortly after taking occupancy were preparing to be evicted for non-payment of rent. Around October of 2017, the same female re-posted the original Kijiji advertisement without the knowledge or permission of the landlord, advertising the location for $1600 per month. The female took deposits from eight prospective renters and absconded with over $15,000 leaving the victims with no money and no residence.

Charged with one count of Fraud over $5000 and using a forged document is Chanelle Trottier (19-years) from Grimsby.

Trottier was released with a future court date.

Police are reminding the public to protect themselves when renting. Meet with the responsible person and physically inspect the location prior to signing a lease. Check the address online to make sure it’s not tied to any other scams and never send money to strangers.
