Hamilton Police Alert Community About Recent Bank Card Scam

BankCardScam-Twitter

Hamilton Police are warning the community about a new bank card scam targeting seniors.

In this scam, fraudsters contact victims by phone using a number that appears to be from a legitimate financial institution. The scammer convinces the senior that there has been irregular activity on their bank accounts and their account has been compromised. The fraudster then tricks the victim into providing personal information, including home addresses, passwords and PIN numbers. The scammer tells the victim that a courier is on the way to pick up the compromised bank cards and that new cards will be sent out to them the next day. After the cards are collected, the fraudster uses the victim’s information to withdraw money or purchase electronics.

Hamilton Police are reminding everyone that financial institutions will never send a courier to collect your bank cards. If you receive a call like this, hang up, contact your bank directly, and report the incident.

If you have been a victim of this scam, please report it online at: https://hamiltonpolice.on.ca/report-crime/online-reporting or call our non-emergency line at 905-546-4925.
