Man Charged in Downtown Hate-Motivated Assault
Hamilton Police have charged a 28-year-old Hamilton man following an unprovoked, hate-motivated assault that occurred in the downtown core.
On February 21, 2026, officers responded to a report of an assault in the area of Augusta Street.
Investigators determined that a woman was standing on a public street when she was approached by an intoxicated male who began verbally harassing her using derogatory language. Despite attempts to de-escalate the interaction, the accused struck the victim in the face, knocking off and breaking her glasses. The incident escalated further, resulting in the victim being pulled to the ground and kicked.
The 28-year-old male was arrested at the scene and charged with:
- Assault
- Resist Peace Officer
The incident has been referred to the Hamilton Police Hate Crime Unit for further investigation.
